Bad work done...

I had some emergency work done by my not usual dentist about 8 months ago. I have been to 2 dentists with problems in the tooth subsequently, and both have described the original work as being shoddy and having caused my subsequent problems. Now it turns out that having paid out a lot of money to have the tooth fixed in the first place, I now have to shell out a lot of money to rectify the problems caused by a botched job. Added to which I had a lot of pain and discomfort in the tooth as a result. Somebody suggested that I should go back to the dentist that did the botched job and complain, but I want to know of what good will this be? And/or what are my rights in a situation like this?? It's going to cost a lot to fix and I'm really unhappy about it all.

    Can anybody advise me here?

    Thanks

write a nice letter to the first dentist explaining all this and request a refund. If you do not get a satisfactory response you should contact the Dental Council and ask them to look into the situation. You will find them helpful and unbiased and they will determine where blame, if any, lies.

The work was carried out by a locum at the time. Will this make a difference? Should I proceed with the work that I need to have done anyway? Like would not being able to assess the job done make a difference??

I suggest you speak to the owner of the original practice where the locum worked. I would think he/she would like to know of your problem and probably be willing to remedy the situation whether by redoing the work or making a refund.
As long as your new dentist takes an xray and documents your present problem that should serve as an appropriate record of the botched job.
sounds like you had a substandard root canal treatment done which gave you trouble afterwards?

    Bingo :)

And I wouldn't be having the trouble I'm having; or this extra work done; had the original work been done right in the first place.

Thank you for your advice; I really wasn't sure what recourse if any that I would have, as I've never been in a situation like this before.

I'm going to go visit the original dentist this week if possible.

don't be too hard on the poor locum though. he will be feeling guilty enough when he hears what happened. dentist suicide rates are high and we don't want to add to itbiggrin.gif. It can easily happen that initial root canal therapy is not successful and when it goes wrong it's unpleasant for the patient. Most times if you return to the same dentist they will fix it or send you elsewhere to get it sorted. The trouble is the patient is in pain at this stage and may lose faith in the dentist.

Well it certainly has been quite unpleasant. I'm given to understand that it was the more rudimentary part of the treatment process that was carried out incorrectly(according to the dentists that I've seen since) which obviously is quite frustrating to hear. However, I'll definately go back to the original practice now, it's good to know that perhaps something could be done. Thanks again.
