Saw a left hand G10 at a very resonable price in a well known golf shop at lunchtime and its a club I am in the market for at the moment, only thing is its a pro launch stiff shaft and Im wondering if I should be looking for a reg shaft (im off 18). I know the answer is to try the club etc but I didnt have time today so I thought I would throw it out there for opinion, does the shaft make a big difference to someone with a high teens handicap??

Handicap has nothing to do with it really. If you don't have time to try it out or get your swing speed measured you'll have to go by the distance you hit it. Do you hit it far?? If you hit the ball far it's a good indication that you'll need a stiff shaft - (hitting it farther than average you need a faster swing speed and with a faster swing speed you'll need a stiffer shaft). Hope that helps.

Seldom I am the longest off the tee no matter who i am out with , sometimes if I really catch one I can put it out there but if I am honest about it I would not say I hit it really long, ( nice n straight though ) , suppose I the answer is is my first post, go try it out

I use the G10 with the ProLaunch S Flex and I have to say, it's certainly one of the stiffer S flexes I've hit and it's not the lightest. I'm one of the longer hitters in my club and used to have a problem hitting it a bit too high. I found this shaft helped me get a more boring trajectory.

I agree that handicap isn't a definite indication of what flex you should use, I would say this shaft is one for the longer hitters. If you don't have the club head speed to make it work for you, it'll work against you.

    Do you hit it far??

How far is far? 250, 300?

I'd avoid a stiff shaft unless you definitely know that you need one.

I would reckon that if you can consistently hit your drives over 250 yds then you need to start using a stiff shaft. I can't imagine how a regular shaft would help someone who hits it 250+

    its all about swing speed,
i play with a guy he's off 9 & hits a ping g2 (or g5 not sure) reg shaft, swings almost in slo-mo and has a big long turn,
    he busts it out there,
I'd be 260 carry myself so not the shortest but would be behind him 2 times out of 3...i play off 7 stiff aldila shaft in my driver,

get the shaft to suit your swing, dont try to swing to suit a shaft

I'm a high handicapper, always thought shoudl use a regular shaft in irosn and woods.

however local pro measured by swing speed and recommended a stiff shaft.

I'm not a big hitter (athough that may also be down to my less than perfect swing), so distance not always the best of judges, unless you hit ball clean 9/10 etc.

Absolutely agree, Stockdam. Golf mags etc. generally recommend you go for regular unless there's a good reason for doing otherwise.

For what it's worth, I have a regular ProLaunch shaft in a Cleveland driver and find that to be firmer than a regular Ping or Callaway shaft. Too firm for me. I reckon the stiff would be very stiff.

No matter what anyone tells you, the shaft is the most important component in a driver and you should always try a driver out before you buy it. On the course if possible. You won't learn a lot about ball flight etc. by hitting it into the driving net in a golf shop.

I recently bought a second hand Ping G5 with a soft regular shaft. I went for a 12 degree model. I'm swinging it a fraction slower than normal and hitting it beautifully. Straight out the middle mostly. I've lost a few yards in distance but most of my second shots are now at the green rather than tapping out from the trees. And I'm getting a lovely feel from each shot. Like a forged iron hit on the button!

I'm going to get fitted this weekend for a new driver, I've always played with a regular shaft however I recently changed driver to a more 'modern' club and have found i'm getting slice in my drive now. Could this be down to the whip of the shaft? Or is it a matter of my swing adjusting etc

I hit 250-280 on a consistent basis if that matters

If you're hitting it that far then the regular shaft it probably the wrong one for you. Let us know how the fitting goes. I'd be very surprised if they didn't tell to you need a stiffer shaft. Are you going to ask about your irons too? Might need a stiff steel shaft for them??

No, not getting a full fit yet as i'm going to wait until the new year to change my irons.

There's a good deal on right now for the tour preferred TM Burner (169), i'm a little concerned i'll run into the same problem I had with the last driver but the last driver was all wrong for me weight & lenght wise. Hopefully I get sorted at the weekend.

    Thanks for the help;)

I currently own a KZG SX driver, regular shaft, 14 degree loft and its reasonably whippy. With this i get around 250-260 when hit well!
I think it's nothing to do with the handicap, know a guy who plays off 10 and he got the slowest swing ever, he doesn't go a great deal far off the tee but his short game is top notch!

My advice is to try out as many driver with different type of shafts, i had experince with the G10 with the standard shaft (gold colour i think regualr) , it didn't work out for me. Had the nike sumo 5000 regular, that also it not working out

Do you realise that the reason for needing a stiff shaft and you've a fast swing speed is because if you use a regular shaft, the clubface will remain slightly open at impact.
So someone who can hit it a really long way and they still use a regular shaft is becase they've somehow learned to compensate for this. Thats the theory anyway...
I say just get a few hickory shafts and you'll be grand! ;)

The TP shafts are a better players shaft with tour launch (low side) and an open face (a bad idea for any high handicapper as the bad shots tends to be a push).

Did you get fitted shaydy? How did it go?

Yeah I did it Saturday, defo a stiff shaft. My club speed averaged 107 which I'm told is exceptionally high.

Have to say the lad in American Golf had plenty of time for me given it was a free fitting and in the end didn't have the club he recommended as he was out of stock. They rang around also but no joy so i'll wait a little longer to pick one up.

He made a small adjustment to my swing and I was out playing yesterday and splitting every fairway. Goes to show how far a trained eye can go.

Sound like I'm an advertising agent but fcuk me, Mcgurks charge 30 brick for the same service! I know who I'll be going back to.

Nice one. Sounds like it's worked out well for you. Think how you'll be hitting it when you get the new club!!!!!

Not contradicting at all any of the genuine advice given above, but for what it's worth, I'll share a short story, not dissimilar to the OP's circumstances. I knew the club I wanted, a G10 Reg shaft, 10.5 degree loft, when a friend bought one new and I got to try it for a week or two while he was away. It was perfect, even for me, and it got me back into using a driver again, as I was having great difficulty with driving up until then (my handicap was 21). I thought I'd be smart and look for one on e-bay, knowing the very one I wanted, but ended up looking at so many, and bidding on some, that I ended up winning an auction for a 9 degree stiff shaft. I didn't read the ad properly, and only afterwards noticed the lack of detailed information. Totally my fault! However, it is an absolute blast to play with, and I love it, and I now regularly outdrive my playing partners (not always, but regularly) so I wouldn't swap it! So I would say that if you can get it at a very good price, and if teh price is an issue, don't worry too much that the shaft is stiff. Ultimately though, it is technically not the right club, but you'll love it I'm sure! Good luck
