Going back as a mature student - entitlements?

    Hi all,
I just finished my degree (Level 8 honours) and came out with a first class honours. I was entitled to the 'full' grant as i'd call it, ie. Non-adjacent and top-up because I was living over a certain distance from home.

Now, I have a wild notion in my head to go back next year and do another level 8 honours degree (under grad) - mainly because I like the course and the subjets that would be taught.

The only difference between this is that I would be going back as a mature student (i'd be 24 starting).

Would I be entitled to a grant again, since i'm a mature student? I always thought that to be still entitled for a grant, you must progress (ie. up to a level 9 masters), but i'm hearing wild stories that you can go back as a mature student even if you're not progressing and still get a grant if you were eligable for it in the past. I went to the Mature Student Officer at the NUIG open day (where i'd like to do the course) and was told that i'd have to pay full fee's, that it's nothing more than a rumour that i'd be entitled to a grant again.

    Many thanks for any help

    That was quick, thanks.

Guess there goes that idea out the window. A masters is still on the cards I guess, as i'd really like to further my education, especially in this 'climate'

I was also under the impression you only got a grant if you progressed, but I just found this on studentfinance.ie which says the opposite.

    http://www.studentfinance.ie/mp7550/i-am-over-23-years-of-age-on-1-1-2008/index.html

So it might be best to look for another opinion.

No not a chance of getting the grant for another degree. Basically, you can't get a grant for a course that you already hold a qualfication in.

You can get the VEC grant for five years maximum. In your case you wont get it as you have a level 8 and are going back for another. You only get the VEC grant if you progress from one year to the next and as you have already got a grant for level 8 you wont get it for another level 8.
