Disaster Strikes!!

So having played in my golf society for about 4-5 years this year I won golfer of the year. (started the year with society handicap of 18, was down to 11 by end of year) Needless to say I was absolutely chuffed with myself. Have built up a bit of a fund in prizes and was planning to upgrade my irons, as the set I have are a few years old at this stage & its time for an upgrade...

Then last tuesday, was out playing my weekly five-a-side, went over on my ankle and have fractured my Fibula. I'm gonna be off my feet for about 2 months and have a plate in my ankle.

Apart from getting on here to air my frustrations, I have a question. Has anyone ever suffered from a similar injury & if so how did they find it affected their golf. Any good exercises for rebuilding the strength in their ankle, etc...

Sorry to hear about your injury .
Mine wasnt the same , but I broke my wrist in June , was in a cast for 7 weeks and Physio for about 3 weeks after that . Have played a few games since coming back and while I'm lacking a bit of consistency , wrist isnt giving me any major problem.
Best advice is do what your told and dont rush your comeback . I'd rather wait a couple of extra weeks and be able to play for the next 30 years than rush it and end up with a permanent injury.

    ouch, nasty one.

As said above - don't rush it.

If you would like to speed up the recovery and have a few bob to spare - book a few sessions in the oxygen tank in dublin. Lot of sports people use it to speed up the recovery. i can get more details for you if you want

When you can stand start investing energy and time in your putting. You never know, being forced into practicing this might be the silver lining.

which ankle did you go over on?
if you injured your left ankle, and you are a right handed golfer, then you will be back sooner, as you wont be pivoting on the foot as you swing.

i broke my ankle before, it was fairly painful, and it was about 2 months before i could get back to playing properly, but you will be able to chip and putt sooner.. maybe within 6 weeks..

the funniest part about breaking your ankle however is when you wake up in the morning, and your leg has absolutely no width to it at all.. i had to literally sit at the side of my bed each mornin for 10mins to let the blood flow back in.. :D

I dislocated my left ankle and broke my leg in 3 places and also had a plate put in. Its very frustrating alright but just keep the chin up. I am right handed so the left leg is more your standing foot so its not too bad. I do find though that I cannot turn my body into the drive and keep my foot positioned as it was it also turns with my body. So first thing I would suggest is any exercises you are asked to do for mobility and flexibility for your ankle make sure you do them. I was a little lazy and am probably suffering for that in my rotation after impact.

Most important part of your re-hab is rest. the first 6 weeks will determine how the ankle / leg repairs and it is fact that if its a clean break and you rest it and exercise it accordingly that it should knit back stronger than it was in the first place ( so my surgeon told me anyway) so keep the head up.

I found plenty of swimming and cycling brilliant for my rehabilitation and was on the bike 3 weeks after the break. anything that keeps the weight of your ankle joint but involves you using the joint can only be good.

Good luck in your rehabilitation and keep the chin up

Thanks for all the positive comments lads. Yeah its the left ankle & I'm right-handed so hopefully as you've mentioned that should help. I'm diabetic, so I'm doing my best to keep control of the blood sugars to help the healing (which can be difficult when you're confined to the bed/sofa! Will take it easy, and the putting could do with a little work so I'll bear the advice in mind.

Thanks again lads, i look forward to getting back out playing, bujt won't rush things!!!

Not sure I agree with this.
I chipped a bone in my right ankle (Im RH) and was able to play once I could walk, but there is no way I would have been able to play if it was my left ankle. Your right ankle doesnt need to twist through the swing, it just extends. Your left ankle on the otherhand takes a lot of torque on the follow through....

    Best of luck OP.
