    PC World BARGIN ???

Go to the dell.ie outlet. Google it. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 274 ✭✭rcs

Don't know about that... had a look on the outlet store & anything with a similar spec there is a lot more expensive...

Also if you customize a Dell to a similar spec on the regular site it's WAY more expensive...

    Spelling Test FAIL

Seems like a good BA + the windows 7 upgrade!

This isn't as bad a buy as you may first think, since it has a VGA and HDMI output and its ATI Radeon HD 3200 supports all HD video codecs, i.e. VC1, AVC/H.264 and MPEG-2. Further details of the configuration can be found here.

This deal is meh, ok I suppose, but on the whole; meh. The processor is a bit light for my liking.

Not sure if I'd go with an Acer again: I have the 6935G (with T9400 2.54GHz) and have also had rakes of video driver related problems with it. Basically my screen only works 1 time in 10, and I have to hook it up to my TV via HDMI those other 9 times (which I kinda do anyway, but that's beside the point)

They'll try push the extra's on you to make up their margin like coverplan, DO NOT go for this as it is a complete **** up. It is not worth it at all no matter what they say. If you want anti-virus get Kaspersky, it's a lot cheaper and it's better than Norton!

Or get Avast, it's free, and pretty good.

At the risk of being shot, I will mention that Tesco have an Acer 5230 (don't have exact specs) which is a good basic use laptop for somebody who wants to get on the internet and use it for other light use. Price €299

The also have another Acer (don't know model) for €349

Fair enough- and its nice to see it coming with 4Gb RAM as standard. Apparently it supports up to 8Gb RAM in its two sockets. I'd have heart failure if I were to check the price of 4Gb modules though.

Its also Wireless N and Gigabit LAN by the way.......

It has a 512Mb Radeon HD3200 (you can dedicate up to 2Gb of RAM to video if you want)- so dedicated graphics doesn't really enter the equation. Its a decent enough chip for a laptop- a bit dated, but very capable.
No laptop has had a PCMCIA slot in several years. PCMCIA was replaced with 'Express Card Slots'- of which this has one.
Re: no TV out- ditto- no-one uses TV-out anymore, its obsolete- the standard is HDMI instead- of which this has a HDMI port......

The reason it doesn't have the 3 items above- is they have all been superceded, this laptop has newer technology.

EUR22 for shipping- and you can only get the reciprochal version of Windows 7. Given that Microsoft are giving away thousands of copies of Windows Ultimate in Ireland (its giving them remarkable good will), I'd be more inclined to try to get a copy of Ultimate (the processor is VTx capable).

The processor is a bit crap- but as a package the laptop really is remarkable value. I would seriously advise uninstalling the majority of the crapware it ships with though- the Acer 'freebie' software slows down any machine considerably.

I find it to be a very handy service, got a new laptop out of it a while back!

Sorry, what does 'reciprocal' mean in this context? And are there any other places where Win 7 Ultimate is being given away apart from the DIT launch?

It means- if you have 32 bit Home Premium on the laptop- you can only get the 32 bit Home version of Windows 7 as an upgrade- not the 64bit, or Professional, or Ultimate (or any of the other flavours).

There were thousands of copies given out by MS to Irish consumers, students and IT professionals thus far- totally aside from the DIT launch next week. They've given out thousands of free copies.

How does this compare to the DELL Inspiron 15 for €399 - see basic spec below.

    Inspiron 15
    - Intel® Celeron Dual Core T3000 (1.80 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 1 MB L2 Cache)
    - Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium SP1 (64 BIT) - English
    - 15.6" Widescreen WXGA CCFL (1366 x 768) TFT Display with TrueLife™
    - 3072MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [1x2048 + 1x1024]
    - 160GB (5,400rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive
    - DVD +/- RW Drive (read/write CD & DVD)

Would this processor at €45 extra be better?
    Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor T4300 (2.1GHz, 800MHz, 1MB cache)

There should be a control to do it where the numbers are above the letters, or else there is a button on the front of the machine.

    Acer tops it:

    + Larger HDD
    + More RAM
    + Webcam
+ HDMI (really is becoming a more and more necessary selling point)
