Wierd R.O.F issue on DE UMP

Took my DE UMP for a skirmish yesterday and had to "retire" it due to the fact that the rate of fire was all over the place. It would fire really slowly (1 bb every second or so) and then speed up to its normal rate and then back down again. All the while I was supposed to be firing on Full Auto and when it slowed down it sounded like it was under load. My longest full auto blast up to that point was about 3 seconds so nothing I would consider excessive.
I have checked the battery and switched it with one from my MP5K (which has a consistent ROF on that battery) and the problem is still the same. I took apart the handguard where the motor and gearbox are and there are no loose or frayed wires. The hopup seems fine so I definitely think it is either the gearbox or the motor.
Anyone out there in the world of airsoft got any ideas? I am not great with the 'leccy bits or with mechanicals in general but willing to give it a go if anyone has any tips (and if I have to open the gearbox does anyone know how I get the fire selector off?).

Sounds like your motor has given up on ya, those are the exact symptoms of this.

The motor is a short shaft type like in an AK or a G36 and you can pick up a G&P one on ehobby for 25 quid, its a really good performer too. :)

Yeah, I was leaning towards the motor as there are no wierd noises coming from the gearbox at all. Will order one up on the web. Any ideas how I get the fire selector off?

You dont need to take it off, just remove the plate under the grip and the body pin, select semi and wiggle it out. :)
