I just thought I'd come on and gloat a bit to anyone who is waiting for the first of November to come round. For us lot up North the first (pheasant Saturday of the season has just passed and boy was it great to get back out again!!
Only shot one bird but I don't care, the dog worked well, the weather was great and the one decent chance I had I took it.
I say the dog (Irish Setter) worked well, he worked well after the first hour when he settled down a bit. In the first five minutes he ploughed straight into a pack of four young birds without so much as breaking stride but I'll give him a byball as it was the first day back!
Not too may snipe about, but in our part of the country (Tyrone) the last couple of years hasn't been good anyway.

    nice to be out .

in the bottom of your heart do you think its to early for pheasants .

im shooting pheasants 25 years now and in the latter years were letting soft birds off more and more .

i honestly think the game seasons have to be looked at especially ducks .

also the stag season why stop it on the 31st of dec and give out section 42s like sweets over the summer .whats the point .

its time for some group with a interest in game more so than politics to grab the rains and lead from the front

Your right about the quack, far too young to be shot, maybe the shoot diary dates should be looked at, to near the limit of quacklets, but these young ducks are encouraged to quickly find their water and flight, it can be sometimes hard to tell between parent and border line, when some are flying too high, and me being half asleep at 6.30am on the banks of the foyle. good luck.

Agree on the ducks. Havn't shot one since 1st morning & sorry I did. They were grand & all but would have been fine birds in a month or 2...

As for pheasants, we have a lot birds that are weeks away from been pinked up!
    Scraggly little teenagers! :D

Only difference with pheasants is, you can generally tell when they get up if they are decent birds or not. Tail length & a good hearty crow always helps...
Had dog out in shooting grounds twice this week, brought the gun for any vermin that I might come across but I covered every bird he put up for a bit of practice. Half a dozen over both days that i would not have shot as were 2 small & only few weeks old. (Few I would also however - Bring on November!:D:D)

Morale of the story. Pick your shots, if in doubt leave him out! He'll be there the next day. Ducks not so easy though. November would help them alot.
