XC + Racing on hardtail or full sus

Thinking about trying out a bit of mtbing next year. I used to do it years ago up and down to three rock but never got into it really. However now I'm interested in getting back into it with a view to doing some races. Not really interested in the hard core full on downhill stuff but more the singletrack stuff both up and downhill ie cross country.

So with that in mind. Hardtail or full suspension? Budget is around €2k

honestly this will depend on the type of terrain that you are racing on, if it is rough you may want a full sus so you can go faster over tree roots and such but on smooth terrain a hardtail has better power transfer. i reckon that if you can get a full sus with decent lockout that would prob be ideal.

With the types of full sus you get for 2k-2.5k these days, (ie Giant Anthem) how far off the hardtail expierence are you? Even on the smoother stuff? What's the weight penalty? 2kgs?
