iphone not picking up 3g signal on 3

I have just moved over my iphone 3gs (OS 3.0) to 3.
Everything is configured and working just fine.

When I travel outside 3g coverage I get downgraded to 2g signal - as it should do.

When I return to 3g coverage the phone isn't picking it up though.
If I go to settings I have 3(3g) selected - If I re-select nothing happens, If I select automatic nothing happens in order to get 3g signal I have to select 3 - save and then go back and select 3(3g) - this is when I am in full 3g coverage.

This is a pain because I live right between 2g/3g coverage so I have to do this quite a lot!

Don't think this is anything to do with the phone, this was working perfectly fine on Meteor. Has anyone else seen this problem? any workarounds?

I have the same issue myself and I am also with three. I usually just switch airplane mode on and off and it then picks up 3G. It's a little annoying but I have not found a fix for it yet.

    hmmm... that is annoying.

starting to really really regret moving to 3. They have not been very good so far.

some people report hit and miss between iphone and 3. my iphone never ever friggin' worked with 3, though it worked with all other operators. it doesnt work with 3 uk either.

im assuming its the handset really and 3. the 3 sim works on everything else.

unfortunately since the search has been disabled on the forum, there is a thread around, ull just have to take my word for it. hit and miss. simple as that. i was unlucky, seems you might be too. there was one other user as well.

I have tried my 3G on Vodafone, O2 and 3 with 3 being the only network that the phone has a problem locking onto the 3G signal. It works fine if you stay within 3G coverage all the time, but it's almost impossible to use any data applications if you are switching between 2G and 3G coverage. Even if you have the 3 profile installed, it still doesn't help.

Using a 3 sim in an iPhone is really only an option if you are consistently in a strong 3G coverage area all the time IMO

When you are in 2G coverage you aren't really on 3's network, you are roaming on Vodafone. Once you are roaming on another network it is technically more challenging to switch back (it takes more time), that's why the phone tries to keep the signal you are on as long as possible before switching back, so you remain on Vodafone.

That's one of the main reasons why 3 is useless for any kind of data usage. That, and the fact that you can't use data at all while on 2G.

Ok, I understand now. So essentially this will happen no matter what phone I have so?

Oh well, hopefully 3 will increase their 3G coverage. in the future.

    Spipov; thanks for the link!
