Brakes on Mercedes

Anyone have an idea before this costs me the universe.

I have a 1983 Mercedes 280 diesel converted 3L automatic (126 body). Its a great car but recently I put my foot on the brakes and my foot hit the floor and the car just about stopped. Then they fix themselves and it appears that there isn't a problem but then they go again. intermittent problem.

They seem fine now but I cant drive the car with that kind of thing going on.

Sounds like a master cylinder problem.

That thought was lurking in the back of my mind. How big a problem would that be?

+1 on the master cylinder (the slave might need doing also).
Not a very difficult job to do I would imagine. Parts could be sourced from GSF or Euro Car Parts (driving a 1983 Merc, you possibly have your own source anyway). Labour could be about two hours?

There doesn't seem to be any fluid leaking which is a bit confusing. Have the car 2 years without a bother so I'm not that familiar with them.

    Thanks for the replies

Is it leaking on the inside?

It doesn't appear to be leaking and it also doesn't seem to have lost any fluid from the reservoir

When you braked that time, were you rallying it? Was the pedal firm or soft? Has it occured any other time?
Get it looked at by a professional anyway - its dangerous. Try a merc specialist maybe (e.g. Tony Canning)

It first happened reversing out of a driveway the pedal went soft. They are normally hard but my foot went partially to the floor. Then coming to the next lights at 15mph they just didnt work. Then they fix themselves but it happened again. So its off the road at the moment.

Could be the brake fluid. Water/Air in the system can cause all sorts of weirdness, especially if the fluid has been in there for a while.
