    Hey everyone,

Last night my mountain bike was stolen whilst I was at a house party. I cycle to work 3/4 times a week (7.5km each way), changing to 5 days in January. I pretty much need a new one by Thursday (my next day back at work) but the bike that was stolen, I've had for nearly 11 years so I've never bought a bike before.
The route itself is fine (if familiar with Galway City, from Westside to Boston Scientific) the only hills toward the end of the journey.
I really have no idea what type (racing or stick with mtb? suspension? etc)/how much so thought I'd come here for advice before I go to one of the shops in town (Galway City)

Cheers for any advice ye can give me!

How much would you be willing to spend on the new bike?

I'd say €500 would be the ballpark amount I'd looking to spend...hopefully it won't require more than that. Was looking at the Trek 7.1 for 425 or 7100 for 395 in a local shop...wish I had the time to buy online but needs must and all that./

The usual response imo would to be to get a road bike or hybrid rather than a mountain bike unless you will want to be going offroad. Suspension isn't a great idea on the road.

The choice then is between flat or dropped handlebars.

You need to set your budget before anyone can recommend a specific bike though.

if you're not going to be doing any offroading then I would go for the hybrid or road bike, it'll make the commute much more enjoyable! I have a Trek 7.2 for over a year now doing the same distance commute as yourself and I've no complaints with it. My friend has the 7.1 you're looking at and its a nice bike! 425 is a decent price as well I think...

Be warned though, if you feel you might get more into cycling with the new bike (spins at the weekend etc), in the long term it might be best to spend that bit more on a decent road bike (drop handle bars, lighter etc) to save upgrading in a few months! After a month of having my Trek I was mad to get a racer and I'm only getting around to getting it now! :)

I am also looking for a similar bike. I just got quoted €399 for the 7.1 fx, from 'the bike shop' in Wexford town. They do not have it in stock though.
