Right strange but I'll try explain.

Let's say you were born Joe Bloggs that is the name in your passport / birth record. Your mother and Daddy split so instead of using Bloggs you start using Burnes.

So you're growing up have a few run in with the law and you're brought to court as Joe Burnes but when infact your name really isn't even that and you have Bloogs and your passport and everything else.

Would I be right to say I've no criminal record and could apply for something like a prison guard / police something along them lines?

A background check will be done before you get accepted to the gardai or prison service.

If you wanted another example, we could change our names to as Gaelige or as Bearla, depending on what you had to begin with.

So I say no, that won't get past a background check

No, you have, if convicted of course, a criminal record. Your fingerprints should have been taken at the time of those convictions and that's where you would be rumbled along with a background check.

However saying that, those convictions may not automatically disbar you from applying to the said services you mentioned. Depends on how serious they were and how long ago.

It will depend on how extensively the second name was used. What is on the school and exam records. Even at that the guards will always investigate an application by finding out about the applicants family. The local superintendent will be contacted and if he does not know the applicant personally will get a guard in the station to do some research.
