Simple : As a 17 year old lad, looking to fund my way drinking through college, is there any point even trying to find a part time / summer job at this stage. Or is anywhere even looking at making these available? I'm sure there'll be stiff competition from highly qualified people looking for any sort of job. :(

There's definitely no point in looking for a summer job now, but you should be able to get a part-time job. It'll just take a bit of patience and effort. :)

Too late for that I'd say, a position came up in UCC for instance at start of September for student help and 250 applied in the first day so they took it down again instantly! No harm trying but I'd be looking at shops in the locality more than your college. Depends on where you are too, Dublin should make it much easier than Cork for instance.
