Weird lights in Mayo

Went out for a walk with the missus there, saw about 10 orange lights in the sky, seemed like a line of planes, bar a few stray ones - I'm pretty sure they were planes, saw some lights flashing on some of them (like the wing lights)

Anyone know what was going on? (I'm in Ballina if that helps!)

Some of them might be to do with delayed flights from Europe - due to air traffic control problems earlier today on the transatlantic route?

They seemed to be flying very close together and at a low altitude.

Aircraft dont't display orange lights, red/green/white and flashing white/red strobes are all you'll see.

I know you probably know the area, but if it was dark and there is a hill in that direction (as you say they were low), maybe there is a road on that hill with road works going on. Hence the orange lights very close together at low level. Just a thought, not trying to belittle you in any way.

It was in the middle of town, near the cathedral, which is a big wide open area - at first, I thought it was a string of lights coming from the top of the church, but then noticed them moving.

What type of aircraft would have orange lights?

Any night clubs in the area?

I've seen strange lights in the sky around dublin only to find them coming from outside a night club or some one using them for advertising

Yeah, 1 and they have a ****ty light that's been around for the last 10 years or so - no way of mistaking it for anything else.

I was thinking it might be something for charity at first, thought someone here would have heard. They were moving southwards, so may have been going to Knock or Galway or further.

As Confab says, Chinese lanterns again.

These Chinese Lanterns are quite popular these days. So easy to get in the UK. http://www.chineselanterns.co.uk/skylanterns/chinese-lanterns.html

I have seen a constant flow of them, in pairs, for about 30 minutes each, twice this year. Being carried along in the wind south of the approach to LHR's 27L. No comments from pilots or warnings from ATC. I had never heard of them until I queried what they were.

Moving statues with wings from Knock perhaps? Or else maybe the holy stump of Rathkeale grew wings? (I bet some one poured red bull on it!)

whos wedding was it then ?

they would of had to get over a miles worth of som kind of string and tie close to 100 of these sky lights together, when we seen them they stretched well over a mile(probly more) moving in a perfect line, they was a second line flying parrallel to the main line, and at the end ther was 3 flying parralel,.... and they were moving in the oposit direction of the wind, we could see the smoke from the chimneys blowing the other way
