    This week includes

Richard Wilson in discussion with Mark Lawson, David Lean profile by Jonathon Ross (both Saturday)

All week "Electric Dreams" season including The Life and Death of a Mobile Phone, E-Mail is Ruining My Life, Electric Dreams (the programme) , Micro Men (the story of Clive Sinclair, Chris Curry and the BBC Acorn - ZX81 battle)

    Wednesday - It's Only a Theory

Sprial 11 and Wallander - for when you are tired and bored of US cop shows.

and Jonathon Meades Off Kilter, quick repeat on Monday night.

Quality programmes that don't feature ad breaks or treat viewers as if they came down in the last shower.

Beeb 4 is the only channel that consistently delivers programming that I regard as wholesome. It's a crying shame that it isn't on the proper Irish Sky EPG.

That you have to go to Other Channels is an outrage to be honest, make no sense.

Don't forget it had the excellent 'Gameswipe' last week.

And that Sky+ won't record off it. Still, I have other sources that do a far more thorough job than any Sky+ box ever could...

I agree. If you could record it as normal on the skymagicbox, I think I'd watch an awful lot of it.

A good reason to dump Sky and get a HD FTA box with a built-in PVR.

You excite me strangely. What are these things? And don't be afraid to talk to me as if I'm an idiot. Seriously.

I always think 'other channels' by sky is just so childish and petty. ITV 1-4, BBC 3 & 4 etc. as 'other channels', while they have 100s of rubbish channels on there nobody will ever watch.

Love BBC4. Madness night on Friday was great. Nothing like madness to lift the mood of everybody of a dark winters evening.

The box of choice at the moment is the Humax Foxsat HDR.
    http://www.humaxdigital.com/uk/products/product_stb_satellite_foxsathdr.asp

It has a full EPG, Sky+ functionality (320GB disk) dual record, series link (including an alternative system better than Sky's) - best still: recordable BBC HD/BBC3/BBC4/all the ITVs (including HD) plus the C4 family.

Once off payment for the box (about 300 I believe - shop around) - this is all totally legal - it's the UK freesat system.

I kindof miss RTEs, Sky 1 and F/X, but now RTE has an 'iplayer' I'm not paying Sky money each month to watch a couple of programs on Sky1 and FX.

Currently recording and watching Harpers island in glorious HD (on BBC HD)

I bet you could rig up a DIY attic aerial for RTE for pennys. Some fine mesh for the antenna and some co-ax cable and you're sorted.

Another option would be the Azbox (loads of discussion here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055537752). I have one and although the firmware is still beta, is is getting very close to the Humax in terms of functionality - I can also record all the BBC and ITV channels including HD and an EPG has just been released.

In addition, I use mine as a media streamer so I can watch all my backed-up movies and TV shows remotely from my PC server.

You can also install a DVB-T tuner for the digital Irish channels currently being trialled.

Serious alternatives to Sky are just around the corner, Murdoch better watch out.

    10:00pm to 10:50pm

Life, The Universe and Douglas Adams.

A celebration of Douglas Adams, the man behind The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, who died in 2001. Adams was as full of contradictions as the galaxies he created in Hitch-Hiker - a writer who found writing torture, a techie who was ill at ease with the modern world, a sci-fi fanatic who adored PG Wodehouse, and a giant who forgot the extent of his own body. With excerpts from the TV version of Hitch-Hiker and contributions from Stephen Fry, Terry Jones, Clive Anderson and Griff Rhys Jones.
