Accounting Softwares for practice?

Just for curiosity, wondering what accounting softwares are used in accountancy practices in Ireland? Is sage popular here?

And Is there much difference between small to medium sized practices and larger ones(Top 10 or big 4) regarding the way the accounts were prepared or audited?

    Thanks !

I've asked this question on here before and didn’t have much success in terms of the amount of replies I got. Sage accounts production has the lions share of the market. Sage accounts production was originally Apex software and was bought out by Sage in 2002, (big news at the time). The people behind Apex (now known as Relate) have launched new accountancy software specifically for accountants in practice and are starting to make in-roads into a lot of practices in Ireland and UK.

The problem was that Sage never developed accounts production since they took it over from Apex and the product has remained more or less the same. Anytime they release an update, it’s full of mistakes and its very time consuming trying to fix it which you have to do manually. As a result many people stopped paying for support and just worked off the old versions.

CCH also have practice software but I've only ever used the tax module and that too is full of bugs. CCH support is in the UK so they're not that familiar with the Irish market.

I'd highly recommend Relate software, I've used a lot of accountancy software over the years and I theirs is the best. Their support is also very good.

Big 4 practices used their own custom made software but outside of that they would use relate of sage accounts production.

I’ve no affiliation with Relate software.

Appreciate your reply and thanks for the information. I will have a look of the website of the software you recommended. Cheers.:)

I would second censuspro's recommendation of Relate. It's an accounts prep package, timesheets, wip control , etc all rolled into one. It's not cheap but has been well worth the investment imo. Sage has been very unreliable for the past number of years.

Not sure if this is the correct thread, but do you know what tax software the big 4 use or do they develop it themselves?

I work in an accountancy practice in Carlow dealing mostly with SME's and the package used is by CCH and is called Viztopia accounts. They also provide the WIP functions which is integrated with timesheets, billing etc.

Easy to use and is relatively bug free. The odd one crops up every now and again but system support is fairly helpful
