Surprised there hasn't been a thread on this yet. Very sad news indeed.
Comedian Frankie Boyle has quit as a panellist on satirical show Mock The Week "due to other television commitments", the BBC has announced.

A spokesman for the BBC Two programme, which has been commissioned for a further two series, said Boyle had been "a brilliant member of the team".

"The door is always open for him to come back," the spokesman added.

Dara O'Briain will continue to host the show which pitches two teams of comics against each other.

Boyle is leaving the show after seven series as a panellist.

I wonder is there something more to this than they're letting on? Strange that he's gone for good so soon after falling ill on the final show of the current series.

Won't be the same without him.

Maybe it'll be a chance to freshen things up, clear out a few others for a while.

Hopefully he is getting his own show. He's the only reason I watch MTW.

    What's this about falling ill?

He was the only reason why I'd watch this weak premise for a panel show. It's like someone decided to put Have I Got News For You and Whose Line Is It Anyway together in the hope of creating Dave repeats gold. The end result falls between two stools badly because of the mixture of interchangeable and ephemeral material.

He had some mystery illness that caused him to miss the recent episode.

He's probably back on the sauce.

I hope he comes to Dublin sometime, I'd love to see him live.

Shame he's left the show, he was brilliant on it!
Particularly loved him on 'Scenes we'd like to see' - Such quick wit and brilliant one liners.

I'll still watch the show, I'm a massive fan of Hugh and Russell.

its a pity it's not ed byrne that's leaving!

he's just not funny at all, and the sad thing is i think he tries harder than everyone else to be funny

Frankie Boyle is mock the week!

Pity he is leaving it. Definitely the best member of the panel...

Aww, but who will ridicule Kerry Katona every week now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

i think whats important is that they don't get in someone who acts like frankie boyle. I'm surprised and sad tbh, he surely knows how popular he is on it which i'm sure makes people go to his live stand up and it would strike me as an easy number filming wise

I don't know if they will get someone as good to replace him. Defo not going to be the same without him!

Sad news indeed by far the funniest person on mock of the week

Cant say I agree, he's excellent but I think he's at his best when he is reacting. Presenting a show can suck the soul out of a comedian, not that I think Dara is great but he is not at really that funny on MTW, I feel that being 'master of proceedings' is detrimental to their comedy.

Think its called " Ego-itis".......happens when someone's in the one place for too long and doesnt get to host the show......:P

    Definately the loudest......

Found him a bit irratating lately...constantly shouting over other people...sounded a bit pi**ed off tbh......i do like him though...

I signed up to his mailing list a few months ago and received this email yesterday:
My negroes, my bitches, I hope you are well

I have a few things to tell you, Frankie Boyle Club! This week, you should have received the decoding ring that allows you to read the messages on your membership card and badge. If you've not yet received the ring, it must be stuck in the post or we forgot to send it or something. Anyway, both messages read "I am a ****".

My book is oot! Here's a link to a wee sample chunk, in case you're wondering if it's any good:

    http://www.frankieboyle.com/stuff/default.html

I'm also doing some more tour dates, including a DVD record at the Apollo on June 4 & 5. Dig it!

    http://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/search?tm_link=tm_homeA_header_search&q=frankie+boyle

And finally, I've decided not to do any more Mock The Week. I've done what feels like a good few thousand of them now and I feel I've mocked the **** out of the week. I salute everybody there (salutes). I'm going to concentrate on next year's tour and some other funny things I'm writing. Be careful out there everybody.

Switched off straight away the night they announced he was ill. Awful show, only worth watching for his moments.

A little unfair I think, depending on the guests it can be totally hilarious some weeks, thanks to David Mitchell and also, Hugh Mitchell can be well up there with Boyle...especially on the improv stuff.....

I thought I'd take the liberty of putting the regular panel on a graph to display how I feel...

Hugh Dennis funnier than Dara O Briain?

    Are you well child?

Shirley a female guest must be the most annoying?

I never found mock the week or Frankie Boyle ever to be funny.Maybe i didn't give it enough of a chance but the few times i did watch it i thought it was awful and the most annoying of the lot was Frankie Boyle.

    What about moments like this...?

He was a strong member of the panel but I don't think it would be that devastating to bring in some fresh blood and share the jokes around. Frankie wanted to hog all the showtime, that's not to say he wasn't funny. David Mitchell would be an adequate replacement.

Terrible news, Frankie Boyle was the best thing about Mock The Week.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,148 ✭✭✭✭KnifeWRENCH

It's a shame he's leaving - he was the funniest panellist. I do agree he tended to hog the limelight a bit too much but the show won't be the same without him.

The best possible consolation for Frankie leaving would be if David Mitchell replaced him. Mitchell is by far the best guest they have - making him a regular would be great.

Defo! They have ruined Charlie Brooker by getting him to present shows.

Only watched Mock the week for Frankie Boyle, would be dire without him.

I've always found Mitchell not to be that good outside of Peep Show.

    thats just sh#t, he's a legend

The only way to make this any better is if they get rid of Ed Byrne and Gina whatsherface.

+1 on David Mitchell as a replacement

I think the total opposite. Funny that, however thats not to say I dont find him funny in Peep Show, quite the contrary....quite.

I have to say that I think his greatest joke was in the section:

"unlikely letters to be read out on points of view"
"Dear points of view: watching Queer Eye for the Straight Guy made me think that if I made gay friends they'd give me fashion tips. Actually, they f*cked me"

Judging by the show that Frankie missed due to "illness", then i wont be watching it anymore. Hes was the only real reason to watch it. His contributions were just sooo much funnier than the other panelists.

That Mitchell guy is ok. Like Frankie he likes to go off on tangents but unlike Frankie his just seem abit sterile and usually seem to be a case of him trying to hard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,111 ✭✭✭Jesus Juice

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

    I'm never watching again.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,393 ✭✭✭elshambo

hasnt the show pretty much run its course anyhu!?

It's been going stale for a while anyway me thinks!

He was using so much material on that show anyway, it was probably damaging his live show at this stage
good time for him to leave, the rest, well the rest.......

Maybe Frankie's working on his own sitcom or something...

I'll still watch it even though he's not on it. Hugh Dennis is always great. The others have their moments...you take the rough with the smooth.

Ah I dunno about that. Frankie's the better joke teller but no-one can go off on great rants and tangents like David Mitchell! :D
Also Mitchell's mainly an actor and a writer, he's not a stand up comedian. Which makes it even more impressive that he's so good on MTW.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 649 ✭✭✭Antbert

Finally. I might actually watch it now.

I'm all for replacing him with David Mitchell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 420 ✭✭KrazeeEyezKilla

The programme peaked two years ago and definitely needs a change. The last series was poor and was just them shouting over each other, Frankie seemed bored and I thought he was much better on Charlie Brookers show than on any MTW this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,906 ✭✭✭SarahBM

I'll miss Frankie! He was crude but he was just saying what everyone else wished they had the balls to say!

mock the week will never be the same. Im dreading to think who they will try to get to replace him!
