    Hi all

I'm 34 year old who has recently (2 weeks ago) joined MMA club.At the moment
trying Muay Thai and to be honest I really enjoy doing it :),howerer I have a problem performing roundhouse kick:(.My hips seem to be very stiff and because of it I find very difficult trying to rotate them and that equals no enough power
    in the kick.

    Any thougts?

    thanks

If you can get a bag a to kick and do so as much as you can.

Get your instructor to break down the move for you.

It sounds to me like your not rotating on the ball of the foot (the one on the floor) through the kick.

Probably the best way I can describe it is that the heal of that foot should ideally be pointing at your target, this will help with your poor flexibility.

I'd try working with your instructor on that, and work on it with a bag or target. I find it hard to go through the motions shadow-boxing&stuff without connecting with something.
Just try driving your knee, and swinging your hips. On the moment of impact, try arching your back, and twisting just that much more to get that extra *umph* You'll feel this in slow motion, because it's a real awkward position. I had to get used to it myself Thai Boxing, coming from a Karate&Tae Kwon Do background where you kind of snap the leg and recoil. It took a while to get use to that twist and follow through. Once you get it down, it won't feel ackward anymore. :)

I find the best way to improve kicking technique is start by concentrating on the follow through. Practice just kicking air and concentrate on swiveling on the ball of the standing foot. Ideally you should finish every kick by swivelling fully 360 degrees until you finish back in your original stance. This will improve your confidence on your standing(swivelling) foot and will give you that extra incentive to follow through with your kicking hip. Then of course you can move onto the bag once you get that confidence. All about practice.
And ideally your standing foot be pointing about 45 degress plus to the outside of your target at impact. This will allow you to get your standing hip out of the way as your kicking leg comes around.

    And some good hip stretches

do this everyday you'll have Patrick Swayze hips.

    Thanks all for your replies

I really appreciate all the help:) I got from you guys.you made so many valid points and frankly speaking all of them would refer to me personally.
I'm going to practice, practice, practice and we'll see where I go from there.
The coach I have is great and easy going but there is 20+more people on almost every session+he has to train his own fighters in the ring.

I will try to implement what I learned from you guys

    Thanks again:)
