VirtualBox seems to be the most featured.
It even has 3D acceleration now!

virtualbox you can vet versions for windows or linux etc.
and can run / install windows or linux or dos or solaris on any ofthem ,

of course you need more RAM and more hard disk space but that's a given for any VM

Virtualbox is excellent. I have XP in a VM on it for remote access to work. You can run any OS in a VM.

There are serveral that are actually fully featured products that are free
    vmware 3.5 www.vmware.com
    Citrix xen http://www.citrix.com/English/ps2/products/feature.asp?contentID=1686939

Both are bare metal products easy to install and will support windows/linux/bsd/solaris etc etc.

Or as the folks above have said virtualbox from sun, which will install on top of an existing O/S

Free does not mean Open Source. VMWare and Citrix are closed source. VirtualBox is open.

    Actually,
xen source is open source www.xensource.com ,the citrix xen product is based on its code, you are correct vmware is based on components of the linux code but is closed, although they do seem to have some components available http://www.vmware.com/download/vsphere/open_source.html#c138074

    however his question was,as follows

"Could anyone recommend a free one?And secondly can linux be installed on the VM(possibly a better question for the linux forum
    Thanks in advance"

Both products meet these requirements, there was no prequisite that they had to be open source (of which I am a huge fan of BTW) as far as i can see.

    Thanks

Apart from the thread title and forum name :p

    I wasn't aware of Xensource - I must give it a look.
