PAYE marches in the 1980's

I think there was a load of marches in the early 1980's about the burden of tax on PAYE workers. Does anyone who if they changed anything ? Was the tax take on PAYE people decreased afterwards ?

At one stage PAYE was up to 60%

According to Wikipedia " at 60% "one Fine Gael finance minister suggesting people were not being taxed enough"

Anyone know if this is true and if so, who was it? (it could only be Alan Dukes or John Bruton: but judging them on the performances after that , the statement does not sound in character with them.)

Yes, the tax take was decreased afterwards at the same time as the cutbacks in the public sector took hold(post '87).

Basically, the lesson was we couldn't tax our way to pay for the public sector.
