Am absolutely amazed with the lack of coverage over here of one of our great sports people. Theres a short thread in the Aussie Rules section but I feel this deserves to be in the GAA section as that is where Jim came from.

A bit of a set back for Jim

Please God he can fight this. From what I have heard he's supposed to be an absolute gent. He's only young and has two young kids. This is very sad news.

    Get well soon Jim

I'll second that, very sad news. God willing he can beat it. My sister met him in Aus and had nothing but good things to say about him

I'm very sorry to hear that, it's very serious. He was the first non Australian to win what's called the Brownlow medal. It is regarded as the highest individual honour in the sport of Australian rules football. Like everyone I hope he makes a full recovery, but as I said it sounds very bad.

Sad to hear this. Met him in Croke Park a few years ago. Really nice friendly man. Hopefully he can win this battle. Light a candle for him

I emigrated to Australia in the late 80's / early 90's and really got into the Australian rules football , followed Colllingwood . Styne's was at his peak playing for a very good Melbourne side . As an Irishman living in Melboune I was expected to follow them ,as they had 2 Irishmen in the team Stynes and Sean Wight . Hated Synes , hated Melboune......but that documentry last night was inspirational . What a truly fantastic man he is . If anybody needs an uplifting experience ,go onto RTE player and download this program , you will feel humbled and even emotional after watching it . Jim Stynes, as you say Kevin, is a true hero ......I totally underestimated him and now look on him in a totally different light .......Great man .

saw the program last night too, was an extremely emotional production. but did he really drink his own piss??

didn't know how bad a start he had in aussie rules. was great to see him put it all behind him to become the legend.

Watched the documentary last night and was in awe of his guts and determination to beat cancer despite the many set backs.

    Very emotional programme.

He is an inspiration to us all.

Good luck to him with his battle.

just trying to think, is there any other irish sportsman like him? as in someone who got to the top of their game, became a mentor for others and was a leader among the community?

the closest i'm getting is a cross between niall quinn, who's done loads for sunderland and not been a bit arrogant about it, and obviously roy keane, just for the talent (def not the persona!)

I think like jim Stynes, Katie Taylor is another that doesnt get the credit she deserves. world and european champion like but she gets very little publicity. its not right

I started the thread in the Aussie Rules section. It really is a sad story. Keep up the fight Jim, we are all thinking of you.

You are 100% correct, however one must say that Irish society as a whole ( including the media) does not give due attention to sporting excellence.

i'm not just talking about a world champion, but the program showed what jim stynes has been doing since retirement with disadvantaged kids etc. katie is probably a bit too young to mention there. maybe she will in time.

I doubt if Jim Stynes ever faced a drink driving charge. He is clearly an exceptional individual whose shoes Niall Quinn would not be even fit to lace let alone be mentioned in the same breath

If Ireland needed an International ambassador Jim Stynes would be a great man for the job. He is an inspirational man.
Jim was a wonderful sportsman and hopefully the challenge he now faces will be one he can also conquer. I think its a little unfair to compare him to anyone really. We are blessed as a small country to have produced so many great sports people, Cathriona McKiernan, Sonia O'Sullivan, Mick Kinnane, Shay Elliott, Mike Gibson, Ronan O'Gara, Liam Brady not to mention a host of G.A.A players who continually do great work for less well off, Roy Keane does work for Irish Guide dogs

However what Jim needs now is the support and prayers of the Irish people and all sportspeople.

Jim is battling this like he faced opponents on the field head on. He is however getting weak and is unable to take phone calls now. Keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

I've seen that documentary about four or five times now, and it doesn't lose its power or its message. What an inspiration.

And over two years after this thread was started, he is still battling and fighting the illness for his family.

It's the toughest battle for Jim Stynes and his family and one he looks like losing eventually.

As for those criticising the lack of recognition? Please get real. Jim Stynes is a naturalised Australian, famous for his role in a sport for which we have no involvement and precious little interest. As to why the Irish, people or media, should be obliged to fete any Irish player in this game, is beyond me. Fair play to all who play the sport but it's a sport I, and many others, have zero interest in.

(As for Katie Taylor? She's successful in a very minor sport. Again, why should there be calls for interest/recognition just because of her Irish-ness? Fair play to her for doing what she does but why the guilt trip about so-called lack of recognition?)
