    Hi;

I know the new car sales are flat now, but wondering is it a good time to buy if you have the money.

Basically we have two cars, 01 nissan and 06 volkswagon.

Would it be hard to sell the second hand cars?

Would we get a good deal off the garages now?

I'd say it would be relatively easy to sell the 01 Nissan (what is it btw?) as long as its priced right. There's a good market for that kind of stuff at the minute.

What kind of VW is it? Golf/Passat, Petrol/Diesel, Mileage, etc etc? It depends on what it is, and the overall condition, but it should be sellable too, again as long as the price is right.

Your definately better off trying to sell both cars privately - you'll get a bigger discount of the car you want when buying with no trade in.

you should have no problem selling the Nissan Almera with low milage like that one.It obviously depends whether it is a Hatch or Saloon.A hatch of this age should make 4000euro and a saloon would reach around 3000euro.You will find it hard to sell the Vw Polo.

I think making 4 grand private on a 2001 almera is extremely optimistic. Dealers are asking €2.5k on similar cars with similar mileage.

I went in to buy a new car last week at a larger sized Dublin dealership and offered 15% less than they were asking (which in my reading and the word around town seemed more than fair). The salesman actually said "things aren't THAT bad right now".

Really? sounds like a resonable offer you made

Not a hope of getting anywhere near €4k for an almost 9 year old Almera. In a private sale you will get around €2k to €2.5k. Hatchbacks are worth a bit more than saloons.

Was it a brand new car or second hand?

The most you'll get off a new car IMO is 5-6%, unless there is extra discount being offered by the manufacturer.

It all depends on how well the second hand car is priced TBH. It may or may not warrant a discount. Dont think just because the motor industry is slow, you'll get hugh discounts.

The second hand market is actually starting to firm up quite a bit in the last few weeks.

What's still an acceptable amount to offer (e.g. less 15%) on the listed price of a second hand car? Or to expect to receive?

This depends on the price of the car really.

    Example.

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=200905191677849

This car is advertised @ €15950.

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=200832189619345

This car is advertised @ €12950.

Both cars are quite similar, with similar mileage.

The first dealer might give you, lets say, €1500 off the car.
Would it be fair to go to the second dealer and still expect the €1500 discount?

Too many people get hooked on the discount being offered by a dealer, and they overlook the cost to change, which is the important figure. I've heard so many stories of people looking at cars (lets use the above cars) and give out about the discount the second dealer would offer. What they dont seem to realise is that the second car is still cheaper than the first, even with the discount.

So to answer your question, it all depends on the indivdual car. There is no ballpark discount to expect on a used vehicle.
