RTÉ 2009 Football Rankings

Having seen the various rankings lists over the past few years, I've come to the conclusion that they're all a load of bollocks! The only thing that matters is who takes home Sam Maguire and to a much lesser extent (except maybe in Ulster), the winners of the provincial championships.

Not a whole load of insight went into that really- article could have been written by, and probably was, by some with a very basic knowledge of football

Cavan are 24th. I've no problem with that. They should probably be 30th.

They beat Fermanagh in the Championship though and Fermanagh are 23rd

They didn't beat anyone else either so can't understand it. Like I can see why Kildare are above Dublin because they put in a good display against Tyrone but Fermanagh only beat Down, then lost to Cavan and lost to Wicklow.

There is always a question of what these rankings mean. Is it a measure of how well a team did relative to their potential or is it simply a ranking of who would win if a game was played next week.

If a game was played next week I'd take Armagh, Monaghan and Derry to beat Wicklow, for example. Then again having heard the new Armagh manager, perhaps not.

Thos is just James McMahon's opinion, everyone could make up their own one. Although, it's slightly better than the one I saw in Gaelic life earlier today, which put Antrim no. 6 in the country and most Ulster counties were higher than they possibly should be.

Load of sh1te to be honest and you know that. The placing is about right for Dublin although one could argue that they are fourth but I'd have the equally spineless Mayo there at fourth/fifth instead of Kildare.

The author of the article goes on to say Dublin played atrocious teams like Westmeath but fails to point out any logic when they beat his ranked seventh and fourth team so what basis does he have for putting Kildare fourth when they beat nobody of note?...a gutsy display against Tyrone.Losing by a point is as good as losing by 10 in my opinion.

Kildare beat a terrible Offaly side who haven't put a half decent run together since 2006.They then went on to beat a Wexford team hungover from 2008 with an injury list no team would cope with. They hockeyed a Laois team who are on a continued downward spiral and couldn't beat a 14 man Dublin team who are also gone back on previous years. They then laboured to victory over Wicklow before putting up a spirited performance against Tyrone but still lost. With no provincial silverware in 9 years, fourth place is over generous.

Lemlin,I think you are even too harsh on Cavan. There is no way they can be ranked 30th.They beat Fermanagh and are also certainly better than Carlow,Waterford,Clare,Leitrim,KK,London,New York

That article is a load of waffle.

It makes no sence to me, Cavan in 24th with Fermanagh in 23rd.

Wouldnt worry about what Lemlin has to say.

Anybody who feels that Kildare should be ranked higher than Meath or Dublin should have their head examined. Moral victories against Dublin and Tyrone count for little when both capitulated in further rounds. Equally, Meath actually beat a "top 5" team to make it to the semi. Kildare lost twice, and beat teams who were weak, weaker, and untested. Kildare's big test is next term.

I am a little disgusted with Waterford's ranking. Over the past number of years some good strides have been made in football in the county, and with a bit of luck, here and there over the past year or two, Waterford could be playing at a higher level.

I hope that John Owens is able to continue the work started by John Kiely and his backroom team in recent years.

I'd swap Limerick and Donegal. We're decent, but 10th? Don't think so.
