Registering Your Bike?

Is there a scheme in Ireland to register your bike's serial number like they have in other contries?

That way if the Guards found a bike they could trace the owner.

No, but I'd be interested (and capable) in setting one up? Would anyone use it? I wouldn't be horrifically difficult. Is there anyone in DCC I could contact to get some help promoting it to Gardai?

Dublin City Council or Dublin Cycling Campaign?

Cycling Ireland might be a place to start. I know that its mostly commuter bikes that get stolen but they may have the clout to get someone to take notice.

Why limit it to Dublin? If bike owners submit a photo of their bike with details of group sets etc with serial number and frame colour scheme and say paid €5 registration fee it could keep the administrator in pocket money or new components.

I'd set it up for 5 quid for each registrant... no bother at all :)

Photo, serial, owners details... could make it nice and easy to check if the bike you were interested in was registered, and to whom... could even do a little mobile app out of it.... hmmmmm

I'd set it up for free for registrants cos I'm nice like that.

More importantly, someone could mark it as "stolen" so that if a potential buyer checked it out, it would pop up as stolen. It's something which would really need a fair bit of coverage for it to be effective in recovering bikes and discouraging thieves, which is why I was thinking of the Dublin Cycling Campaign, but Cycling Ireland would be equally good.

I would definately contribute to that. Do it free but leave donations open as I'm sure anyone who's bike was recovered would leave a reward.

I'd be interested in this. Anything that makes it even marginally more likely that a stolen bike will find its way home has to be a good thing.

And for another 20 quid you could re-assign ownership of the bike to somebody else...

This is a brilliant idea, I'll pay €20 any day of the week. Better try and get the Gardai involved though because if they refuse to accept it its of no use is it?

Great idea. 20 euro if you can get the gardai interested. (cynical? Moi?)

The registration site shouldn't have open access. It should be password protected so that if some one stole a bike they could not check to see if it was listed.

Getting the Gardai involved is a good idea but as an ex one, things move very slowly. You would be much better getting the register set up and just offer them access, particularly Kevin Street if they still store recovered bikes there.

Funny I was thinking along these lines for a while. I have www.gone.ie registered. Any developers interested?

As a newbie to this side of the forums I am really shocked at the amount of threads stating bikes have been stolen. The registering a bike idea is very good although it will take time and money. For now, how about one of the mods create a stolen bike sticky thread. People can post the details of their bike and then the nice people of this forum can help each other out by keeping an eye out for them.

Sure you never know who might be watching in the background. It might even deter some shops from buying in stolen bikes if they are already posted here...

Somewhere to start all this from at least.

I'll throw my hat in as being willing to help set it up too. I wouldn't really class myself as a proper developer, but I can do some coding.

Interestingly the guys linked with that have the immobilise.ie registered. Would be great if they were thinking of expanding to here too.

    +1 on the bike database.

think the database is a great idea and would imagine that bike owners would find a €5 charge good value. Just had another bike stolen - one of three taken on the road in the one sweep. Frustrating that it ranks so far down the Garda priority list and there's no other centralised system to help locate them.
