Packet Loss

    Hi guys

I think I'm experiencing bad packet loss since changing over to a new ISP. I've been trying to run a check on the dsl.reports site but thus far its been too busy or something.

Is there anywhere else to accurately test for packet loss?

Assuming that I am suffering from it, are there any ways to resolve it effectively?

    Thanks

    S

    Use the ping command.

You can go to command prompt and type the following.

ping www.google.com or any other website although google is best as it is always up.

which will ping www.google.com with a packet of 32 bytes

To do a continuous cycle type:

    ping www.google.com -t

Leave it run for a while, you will have to do Ctrl + C to stop this and you will get a result at the end. Also you should try it out a different times of the day to ensure that contention is not your problem.

Alternatively you can do ping www.google.com -t 20 (to indicate it to run for 20 seconds).

As well as that, you can run a pathping (which is basically a tracert and ping combined).
The advantages of PathPing over ping and traceroute are that each node is pinged as the result of a single command, and that the behavior of nodes is studied over an extended time period, rather than the Ping's default sample of four messages or Traceroute's default single route trace. The disadvantage is that, using the default settings, it often takes more than five minutes to produce a result.

Each hop computes to 25 seconds so afterwards, it will computer for the combined time (10 hops = 250 seconds).

Thanks Lar, Packet Loss is something I only became aware of over the last couple of days but have been having various problems over the past months.

    1. Bad FPS while playing online games.
    2. Video's stuttering sometimes while streaming them.
    3. Sometimes even sites or pages taking a few sec's to load.

This is all with an ISP who is providing a service of generally around 10GB. I regularly run Speedtest and get results between 7 - 10GBs.

Do they sound like sympthoms associated with packet loss (cant test it now as in work!)?

    Thanks again.

Can you tell us which ISP you are connecting with? Is it DSL / Cable / Fibre / Wireless?

Yep they do, but in fairness they could be a lot of things - But I do suppose the only thing that has changed is your connection so the packet loss tests might be the route to go down first.

It happens on my connection also and can be very annoying. Its acceptable if your browsing but when your gaming

My new ISP provider is BT, and its their 24 GB DSL package that I'm signed up with, although there is only around 10GB available in my area (Dublin 13).

Main PC is wired directly to modem and there is also a wireless network in the house (for a couple of laptops, printer, xbox etc), but its the main PC where I've noticed the issues (and where the gaming is going on). I've not really gamed on the xbox lately so cant comment whether its happening there. When I think about it, I possibly noticed stuttering video's (game trailers etc) on the laptop recently too.

To be honest, the problem has arisen while playing a game and I initially thought it was graphic's card related but having messed around with installing and uninstalling drivers I dont think thats the case.

There is a separate issue with the main PC where it gets that Blue Screen of Death with that driver_irql_not_less_or_equal error but again this isn't related I dont think. (sorry for all the issue's, the PC I've recently gotten wasn't mine so I'm only discovering all these problems!).

Anyway, went a bit OT there, if I am suffering packet loss, is there any way to fix it rather than having to simply change ISP again?

    Thanks again for your help.

What You need is MTR, it will give percentage packet loss at each hop and show the quality of each link. There's a Windows version, although I've not used the Windows one myself

Yeah, a firewall is preventing you from getting online (it's not getting you passed your router) but it can pick up Googles IP address. Try and run the same test within Safe Mode.
