Consequences of being self-employed

Hi, I was working for a company recently on short term contracts as an employee. This has now ended, but there is the possibility of more work for them, but this time I would have to register as self-employed and act as a sub-contractor to them.
I'm wondering what the consequences of this would be for me, I know it can affect your ability to claim dole for a start.
If there was, for example, only a month of this kind of work available would it be worth my while? also are there any costs i will incur in the process?

You have to register with Revenue as being Self Employed and submit returns by October 31st every year. Depending if you have a lot of expense to claim back you might need to get an accountant to do the calculations and fill out the form, probably a cost of 200-300 euro.

Also you may have to register for and pay VAT if your "company" income is above a certain threshold. I think that's €30k or €40k annually.

Clarify and have it in writing their payment terms. If you are an employee they have to pay you. If you are a contractor they may pay you.

You can be a contractor and put yourself as employee rather than director. I did it before with prima, they have company setup and disbanded when contract finishes, seamless and very handy..
