    Hi all,

I haven't posted much but thought this would be as good a place as any to get some feed back on an idea I have.

I work with allot of great Irish artists and bands. Like all industries the music industry has been hit hard by the 'R' word.

Allot of people are staying at home and having friends round for drinks instead of going to the pub.

How about you invite a band or solo artist to come play a gig in your house? In return you let them sell their music and collect e-mail address.

I have access to some great bands/artists and would be very willing to manage the process to make sure that everyone gets what they want from the events.... You get great music and a night’s entertainment. The artists make some money and new fans.

If anyone is interested or has any thoughts reply to this post..

    Cheers,

I'll host one. As long as it's not Damien Rice playing.

The Daniel O'Donnell Lotto ad comes to mind.

how many people could you fit in your living room? 10? 20? 30? would it be worth it for the type of artist you'd get excited about hosting?

There is a group of lads that already do this on the south side of Dublin somewhere.
They are a bunch of lads that own a house, have converted the living room so that there is a stage, installed speakers all about the house, installed a bar, etc. They invite bands along and invite thier friends and everything is free.
From what i have heard the bashes they throw are great, but infortunately i have no more info on them.

Ya, I've know of this guy. He runs a good gig, the difference being his events are open invite. The idea of Living Room Concerts is that you host the event and invite friends... By all mean you can open the invite up to whom ever you like but that would be up to you..

Lets me honest here, Coldplay are not going to play a gig in your living room but someone like BellX1 or Ham Sandwich or Doug Sheridan would...

It's about getting people together who like music and like the idea of discovering new music with out having go to go the expence of going to town....

For new unsigned acts every sale or e-mail address is gold and can give them that money they need to record their next record or release the next single....

I have access to some very strong acts such as
    Doug Sheridan
    SACCADE
    The Kill City Defectors
    Might Stef
    Ollie Coal
    The Coronas
    The Flews
    Director
    The Immediate
    MUNDY
    and more....

I also now allot of manages and label people who I could talk to... No band in the current climate would turn down the chance to sell music and make fans....

If you have bands or artists you'd like to see play in your living room give me the names and I'll do the work to get them...

All we need is a venue and some dates... more then one date to take into account their other commitments...

would bellx1 give up a night off or a night in a bigger venue to play for 20 (max!) people? some of the newer undiscovered acts might, but probably only once as a gimmick. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to be involved in something like this, I just don't think the logistics are sound.

I'm not sure if I'd do a gig for 20 people's email addresses, although I like where you're going with this idea. I think it would be worthwhile either asking living-room guests to throw in a couple of euro or even better, pass the hat at the end of the night and let people contribute what they feel the entertainment is worth.

A band travelling will still have to cover costs, be it petrol etc. and there are easier ways to get email/interest. The incentive for the size bands you're talking about is not big enough (I play with few on that list and I wouldn't see many of them being up for it with such little return).

Sorry - don't mean to sound really negative - like I said, I do really like the idea, just want to be honest too :-)

Yes, and in small places I imagine it would all be a but awkward at the end, people would feel overly obliged to buy the music which presumably they might never have heard before. Many pubs are getting bands in to try & win punters back, many small pubs have them. I know a guy in a band who has played a few small gigs, and has been at birthday parties in local GAA clubs etc or other function rooms.

It would be good if they could publicly do it some place, like how frank black was supposed to play the bandstand in stephens green that time.

If you can get the kings of leon I'll let them in, but they can bring their own beer ;)

HE HE HE HE... I am sure they would bring enough for everyone...

I know what you're saying about buying music, the way its done is the CD's are left on on a table, people can buy if they like. No one would be pushing product on anyone....

Ollie Cole and the Flaws i'm guessing? To have any sort of credibility you really shouldn't get people's names wrong. Especially if you are trying to promote them. And the Immediate have broken up. Conor O Brien now fronts Villagers.

Wasn't trying to promote anyone.... Just throwing an idea out there. Whats your problem..?

The only way this could really be done is to also stream the concerts online. That is the only way ANYONE will make money off this.

If these band's have the concerts in their own space it could be a hit, ala Libertines and the way they used to do it.

Thats a good idea... I know of some HD streaming technology that could work...!!! Cheers

You said this. This is promotion.

Some simple rules for any business - know your product. In this case the artists. If you don't even know how to spell an acts name or that an act has broken up (you also laughably disputed this) makes you look like you haven't got a clue. And if i was one of the artists above reading this (which some of them do) i don't think they'd be impressed...

But yeah good luck with it

    No they're not.

The guy who used to sing in the Immediate is doing quite well at the minute with his new band Villagers and since they've just signed to Domino I very much doubt that they'd be interested in playing a free gig in somebody's living room.

The only situation this really works in is when some guy is having a birthday, knows a friend who isnt in any of the birthday persons groups, and that person knows a local band. said band plays the birthday to a bunch of people they've never met before and get a few fans on bebo or myspace. maybe make a few gig going fans at best. no semi decently known band would get a benefit, nor could i see them wanting to play some randomers house. like mentioned above, one or two might as a gimmick, just to say that they done it once. maybe get a few promo shots. otherwise your best bet may be to go to a venue and try cut a deal with them to host a series of gigs and try get a discount on the fee for hiring.

I've heard of this being done before, but not as a commercial venture. Nizlopi and Gary Dunne have both done this type of thing as competition prizes. Photos/videos were posted on their respective forums afterwards and it seemed like the gigs were great but to be honest I'm not sure that the numbers of people involved would make it worthwhile as either a promotional or a money-making venture.
