Anybody find that Work colleges and general public have no interest in running. Conversation will go straight back to GAA around my parts!
We deserve better for what we put in!

People will generally glaze over when they find out I'm not doing it for charity. Up to that point they look eager to chuck a few euro at me.

Same as that early. People usually don't understand why I don't do it for charity, if they want to gve me money for myself thoughthey are more than welcome. A lot of people I know are fascinated by it all though people in college never used to talk to me about it which I think stemmed mostly from jealousy.

I try not to talk about sports with my non-sporting friends. I don't expect people to be interested in the type of books I read or music I listen too, why should they be interested in my other hobbies?

Yep i work i wouldnt talk about running to many people in work either, there are a couple or runners in the company so thats handy from time to time. But this time of year we do a 5k race so everyone has started coming to me

    Here's a normal conversation,
Friend : "Ipod cool. What you listening too......".
    Me : "Podcast.."
    Friend: "Podcast???"
Me: "Yeah. Ironman talk, it;s Gold" - smiles
Friend :"You are scaring me. You don't come for Friday drinks, you run for 2 hours before work. Are you alright? I'm worried".
    Me: "Yes, I'm fine. "

    Friend: ??? Session ???

They get really interested if they hear you have done a race with the word "marathon" in it--whatever length it is.I had done maybe 10 races in all before last years first marathon but the attention and questions you get from doing that is unbelievable,(i didn't broadcast it either to look for attention btw).Nobody cares less if you do a 5 mile PB though but it is understandable.

Just scare them with a casual long run distance. Like, 'Oh, naw, I'll skip the post work drinks, I have to get in an 18 miler........might see you later'.

Maybe if you are doing it to impress work colleagues then that might be an issue.
People talk about what they are interested in, full stop. And as far as spectator sports go, GAA and soccer win hands down, so its natural that more people will be interested in talking about these sports more.
You could pick almost every other sport other than GAA and soccer and say the players deserve to be talked about more by this logic.

This assumes that people share the opinion that an 18 milers is something important, something to be strived for other than someone just being boring about their hobby.

Right up there with people who won't shut up about their babies.

    It beats talking about NAMA

Tbh I wouldnt want to bore people with talk about my running training.

    Why should they be interested?

If somebody was to describe their rugby, football or GAA training to me I would first fall asleep and then wake up and think to myself "my god this gob****e is full of himself...will he ever shut up".

You have to look at it from others point of view...talk of tempo runs/intervals and easy 10 milers must be about as interesting as grey cardboard.

I dont think its anything unique to running and I certainly dont think we deserve anything.:D

na,dont mean it like that. I hate running bores. I mean you could say you did a marathon every night and it would be straight back to gaa etc.

If you don't like talking about gaa, why can't you understand that other people aren't particularly interested in your running?

At the end of the day an interesting story is an interesting story regardless of the subject matter! Everything - sport, politics, babies, dreams - can be interesting or boring depends on the story.

No I think it boils down to manners..I pretend to have an interest as its polite to listen and give +take but to be honest I would rarely even mention running unless the person is more than a "gaa nut" . I live down the country and unless you are a GAA fan you are not one of them. Funny thing is they are all arm chair fans. At least we are out there at the coalface!

I always put the lack of two way conversation with non runners about running down to a complete lack of knowledge of how much is involved in the sport. Nothing to do with respect or manners. I suppose in reality to a non runner there isnt really all that much they can talk about, relative to the sport.

Im new to this running lark and most of mates are totally ignorant as i was previously of the whole running thing.Any conversation takes the form of a football match analysis.
    How did u get on?.
    not too bad i got a p.b.
What place did u come in
    about 65th
hard luck you might win next time.

    Keeps me grounded anyhow:)
