Thanks for the quick reply, I'm seriously stressing out!!! Getting close to taper time for my first Marathon in Dublin and my shin has started to act up days before my longest LSR. Not sure how effective they are but it's worth a shot.

Also Irishfit.eu. They're not cheap though. I reckon around €30 is the going rate.

Domer and shels4ever, is it that you think the foam roller is not that effective of that the rolling pin etc are just as effective.
    Cheers.

I was told that for my calf I , that a hard tennis ball would do a better job. Have only used it a few timmes so far and seem to work, never used the foam roller so can't really compare them.

I've purchased foam rollers from physio needs.

The foam rollers I got aren't really hard wearing you really need to get 2 and alternate between both of them.

Does anyone know where you can get more durable foam rollers?? Even the two I have are coming to an end.

I would look towards "The Stick" found it much more useful than the foam roller and longer lasting in my opinion much better investment

Not putting foam rollers down, but the rolling pin can do just as good a job. We are in a recession after all!

Another alternative is to get a bottle of water and stick it in the freezer till it turns to ice. Then used this instead of the rolling pin. You get the deep massage needed, but also the benefit of iceing the area at the same time.

As a Physical Therapist and I always have a box of tennis balls and golf balls that I give to clients to self massage and release trigger points in calfs, hamstrings, gluts, plantar faciatis etc. Suggest rolling pin or frozen bottle for ITB/TFL. You dont always have to spend a fortune on gadgets and gismos when something just as good is readily available.

Do you know how much a rolling pin costs? EEK!
Great idea about the plastic bottle in the freezer though. How much should I fill it, so that it doesn't make a huge mess in my freezer?! Now all I need is a bigger freezer.

Pour a little out, and stand it up in the freezer. It shouldn't make a mess... never has for me.

Right. One chest freezer. 355 euro. It's all adding up. :)

I have one, but I might have to throw it out to make room for the freezer. :)
But on a more serious note, when my calf knots up, I typically apply ice and a foam roller. If I could do both at the same time, I'd be far more likely to use it more often. Maybe I'l lbuy a rolling pin, and stick it in the freezer. <grin>

I assume you stretch the calfs too. When stretching, make sure you do the calf stretch with both your knee straight and your knee bent. You have two muscles in there that need stretching. A lot of people only stretch with their knee straight.

Thanks for the advice. Yes I do both, and also the step based stretch (on lift rather than descent).

TKmaxx always have a few in stock. Generally about a tenner. Which is probably only slightly more than they should cost, as opposed to way more.

The one you are seeing for €70 is likely to be the Grid roller which is pretty much indestructible (unless you drive over it). The regular foam rollers break down with regular use and are pretty ineffective after a year of regular use.

Think I paid €12 in Argos

They have them in Elevrys on Wicklow st. Down stairs in the running section, was there on Monday, and they had a decent collection.
