I think sometimes companies go to these events to just offer discounts and the like, not necessarily for societies...

well it did say "windows soc" on it.

I think is was called MS Tech Soc. Go to the student union and see if they have any info would be your best bet.

    UNIX soc ftw.

I am of course bias, but any attempt at this will most likely fail.
Seriously though, what are the actual aims of this society?

To be dominated by Mac/Linux etc. systems :p

Seriously though, the more Mac/*NIX boxes I see, the better:)
At least apple embrace POSIX to a degree unlike Microsoft.

I hope the society would not indoctrinate people like these poor
bastards at best buy. Forza Windoze!

for the love of god don't turn this into a windows vs mac vs unix battle or there'll be hell to pay. If i have the right meaning of it (as far as i can recall) it was said that students get opportunities to test new software and hardware projects upcoming.

ms tech soc is run by a student , she's the 2nd year ms rep , i will tell her about the tread tomorrow , i am guessing you can contact her by email (not sure what the email is , will ask tomorrow).

Hey guys I'm Lyndsay the girl that was running the MS Tech stand in Kevin Street, its a brand society which is why you cant find it online yet.

For the people who were asking what was the purpose of the society, basically because I'm one of the Microsoft Reps for the college I wanted to share what I know bout new software technologies etc with students, not trying to sell stuff or anything like that!

If anyone wants to join just drop me an email lyndsycopeland@hotmail.com

with as many of the following as possible (email is most imp.)

    Name:
    Student Number:
    Phone Number:
    Email Address:

    Thanks guys

    I smell a contradiction here...

Whats the point informing people about new products if the intention to push sales isn't there?
You can't honestly expect people who won't research upcoming MS tech on their own to make a
sound informed decision about potential future microsoft revenue.

What the hell would be discussed at these events? An upcoming filesystem that won't actually materialize?
The new windows dockbar ripped from OSX? I fail to see how this society could be useful for the student.

Microsoft soc -> Microsoft sales propaganda soc

I think is more of a if theres a "new product" the members can test it and provide feedback to microsoft, which some people will be keen to do as they get a sneek peak:cool:

Market research/testing so. little better than installing crapware on
peoples machines to gauge interests/usage habits.

Bebo/Facesham are especially good in the above respect.

@LyndsC - Sorry, but the fact you are a 'rep' only affirms my
suspicions. I am looking forward to the possibility of the xbox
hugging randomcountdown writing idiotic responses to my concerns soon.

Since when should a third level institution become a halting site for
snakeoil merchants? This concern does not only apply to MS socs by the way.

yea you have only banned him about 20 times , seems to be working well so far.

And i have seen the apple rep about the last few days , i wonder why he did not start an apple soc. if this keeps up i will just have to start Amiga Soc .

    Just voicing my opinions.
Have I demonstrated any trolling efforts in my posts?

I am not intentionally trying to get a rise out of people.
Joining was never a concern for me. I can see past the bs of this society.

If you substituted the name Microsoft with Gillette, would you not be a bit suspect?
Pretty much the same motivation. Misinformation distributed or not.

Discuss? That is the point in general.

Stick to the topic of my thread or GTFO. It's either hijacking or off topic or both. Feel free to start a new one though. These are all Subjective phrases made to appeal emotional side rather then logic. If you had opinions state them logicly. If you have a problem report it to ditsu. Due to anti microsoft brainwashing this response is common enough. I'd like to see how many responses we'd get like this if google or let's say sony set up a soc like this. How about ubuntu?

You are missing my main point.
Besides, the phrases emphasis my postings.

If it's actually set up for some benefit, instead of pushing products/market research/whatever. Why not?
This does not appear to be the case. Again, what are the aims of this society as a whole?

Well if you read the OP the guy is interested in joining and wondering how to get in contact, here you come with anti microsoft babble written in the bible of linux all the while not realizing we dont care all that much and we just wanted to help the OP.

Then the OP comes in, (the guy who was asking how to join if your lost) gives out to you for making a post (in his thread BTW) and you ask him "Again, what are the aims of this society as a whole?"

I think its GG for you, put your tail between your legs and walk out of here with whatever respect boards.ie can give you and leave this thread be, you've done enough preaching.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,480 ✭✭✭projectmayhem

Lets calm down folks. I would take the UNIX stuff with a pinch of salt first, then second stop giving out about Naikon and any others who ask questions about the society. I think it's wholly relevant to ask what the aims of a society is here on boards, and if the society members/owners don't wish to answer then that's up to them and reflects on them however they wish to be viewed from boards posters and the likely body of DIT students who come here to look but not touch.

I have banned delz0r for taking the personal abuse route in this thread. I've no problems banning anyone else.

You can critisise the existence of a soc here all you want, as long as it's constructive and in the guise of some form of discussion as far as I'm concerned. Trolls will be dealt with, though.

I doubt anyone else finds what naikon is saying helpful when its clearly getting in the way of the objective of this thread.

Also is everyone able to make triple posts?

Oh the joys of looking at the world through rose tinted glasses :D

I accept the thread is going off topic. I was simply responding to a point made
by the person who is involved in this society. The OP's question is still the main
issue, but I will leave it up to a moderator to decide the relevance of my postings.

I honestly coulden't give a rats ass what people use, but branding me
as a Linux nutjob because I mentioned the word 'Unix', or keep a Linux
sig is not really a fair assesment. I am just curious about this society.

I only wanted to point out the contradiction. Please point me to my 'preachings'.
Mods, feel free to decide my fate. I want to keep this discussion civil.

Yes Microsoft gives lots of free software to students to get them using it, you may not agree with that or a creations of ms based soc , but there is no point to keep going on about it. People have joined it and this thread was started by someone who wanted to join it.

Giving out about Naikon ? i think it more that people can see what he is trying to do.
Which is thats troll the thread. I mean yes its all his opinion , but has his even asked what the aims and goals of the society are ? even if he had,
and then person running ms tech replied with thier aims.
What is the bets it would just end up with even more bs and groundless negativity being posted.

And projectmayhem do you really want to start the spanish inquisition on socs aims ? some of the talk that goes on here is more counterproductive then gods knows what.
And if people running socs have to start defending their actions against posters who have nothing better to do then post their angry opinions all day , it does noone any good.

If your a member of MS tech soc and you actually have complains about it , thats fine , but if you just want to MS hate then go somewhere else.
Also projectmayhem , i think (and not for first time) there is a clear conflict of interest in your moding for this thread.

    .

The post was vague, no mentions of what the society actually entails.
I like many others, paid the reg fee(possibly tuition), so I am affiliated with ditsu.

To re-reiterate, I don't care what operating system people use. All the better for me in the end.
I do care how limited dit resources are used though.

If every thread started with a question and ended with an answer straight point-to-point, there would be no discussion. I think all discussion (bar me defending myself and the thread) has been relevant and fair.
    Vorr1k wrote: »

No. I saw the reported post for triple-posting but the times that the triple-post occurred indicate (to me, at least) that Naikon was viewing the thread and replying in seperate windows or something and never thought to edit the first post. And seeing he has more then 1 or 2 posts I assume it's just an oversight.. not spamming.
And projectmayhem do you really want to start the spanish inquisition on socs aims ? some of the talk that goes on here is more counterproductive then gods knows what.

Whoa, I did not open the Spanish Inquisition, but the idea that no one can ask simply what a soc does or its purpose is completely against the entire ethos of boards.ie, forums or discussion generally. I'm not saying you can openly jump down someone's throat, but a question was asked, not answered and some people laid out some trollish comments back & forth. Angry opinions are not the cause of this debate.
If your a member of MS tech soc and you actually have complains about it , thats fine , but if you just want to MS hate then go somewhere else.
Also projectmayhem , i think (and not for first time) there is a clear conflict of interest in your moding for this thread.

No one was complaining necessarily about MS tech soc. Asking questions about it is different.

As for my modship, you're more then welcome to open a help desk thread to complain to an admin. Also, do take into account my previous heinous conflicts of moderation that I have committed when complaining. If me popping a joke into a thread is a conflict then please, report away.

My joke (here) was the seventh post here. There was no conflict whatsoever. Naikon asked why have an MS one when there's no apparent Apple/Linux etc. one on campus... he was suspicious that the MS one was just an attempt at using the society system to shill products (or at least, this is how I interpreted it). You then answered, the MS Soc rep came on and Naikon questioned the "product testing" bit, thinking again that it felt like MS were using the societies system to shill for beta testers.

    ...and now we're here.

Again, open to anyone to do; report me for my moderation. I want everyone to be aware that this is not a dictatorship and if you feel I'm doing a bad job of moderating this place on my own time for free (as do all boards.ie mods), then use the Help Desk to raise any issues.

You are being completely ridiculous. If you have a problem with me, take it to help desk. You have taken this thread off topic with your ranting. The OP's thread issue was dealt with and another, related question was raised. I wanted that to be dealt with by the MS rep. It is not uncommon for threads to take two similar discussions under one banner.

It's now too derailed. File your complaints in Help Desk and stop saying I'm biased because I use a Mac and left a thread about why an MS society exists. I'm not that much of an internet warrior as to do that crap. If the society was called Coca Cola soc it'd be the same debate. You've interpreted differently by getting offended and being defensive. Like I've said, take it to Help Desk. Do not derail threads on this forum with your problems with me.
