Tried to flash my bios (don't even ask) from a 2007 version to a newer version. All seemed to go well but now the computer wont boot or post. we have power to fans and drives. I have pulled everything out and tried to get it up with just a basic graphics card and a single stick of ram. Can't boot to floppy either. Board is an ASUS P5N-E SLI. Thought of trying to order a new one but the writing is way too small to read on the chip while it is in the computer. Any advice?

    Thanks

Thanks for the reply deano12345, I've been at this all day now. It's strongly looking like a replacement chip from ebay for twenty quid. Although i have googled pages saying that the chip is not socketed so it can't come out. Now this board is 2007, maybe it might be as well cutting the loses and getting a new one. Just so long as it takes the same memory and quad core processor thats in the asus. There have been a few bad reviews on the asus so i wouldnt be too upset if i had to lash out close to a hundred euro on a new one. It was part of an upgrade kit on komplett a couple of years ago....

The P5N is a solid little board.Have a look at the P5N-D if your looking for something under €100

    That should do you fine

Thats grande deano... I am about to plug back in the power and go for one last boot. If it doesn't work i am just for the hell of it going to put another power supply onto it and pull out the ram and give it go. Then i am buying that motherboard!

If it's a socketed BIOS you could look into hot flashing it, though this isn't quite for the faint hearted.

Some motherboards have a boot block alongside the main bios image, which is not meant to be written over by a flash update.

With the motherboard CD or recovery floppy in the drive, can you
    1. plug out off the machine
    2. plug it in again.
    3. Hold down ALT+F2, while powering on the machine until the Floppy light appears. See if you get anything in the screen.
Failing that the alternative key possibility I know of is Ctrl + Home (you should be able to use the Ctrl key on the right of the keyboard, rather than using your chin)

No joy there ressem, Tried both of those. There was talk about holding down the CTRL key on its own but that didn't help either. Usually when there is a bios fault there shoudl be some kind of mismatch error on the screen - but nothing. even took out the memory hoping to get a warning beep to say there is no omemory in the computer - nothing there either.

I am so not impressed. Out with our flexible freind and off to Komplett. I wonder am i going to have trouble pulling this processor off the board? They usually ship a bit of compound with new boards, don't they?

    Thermal compound ?

Not with motherboards they don't,but you can pick up that off Komplett as well

OCZ Freeze is good stuff, plus you don't have to wait for the thermal paste to set in like you do with the AS5

Are you going with the P5N-D that I suggested earlier ?

If you want to spend a little more you could pick up an EVGA 780i FTW

Well Danger_mouse, if you've read a few bad reports about ASUS why not go for a different brand try this one http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=444018. I have a Gigabyte for nearly 2 yrs and it's been great. Re-flashed BIOS also with no issues. ;-)

If I were you I'd try booting without the cmos battery, this probably won't help but I'd do it before you bin the board. just in case

Thats a nice board. I went for this https://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=417481 I know it's refurb but it's my mums computer that i sizzled so i just need something as good as what she had.

I tried taking the battery out and restarting. No luck there. I wanted to get some kind of reaction to say that the processor wasn't at fault. I don't think i will bin the board. I might just for pig iron order a new bios chip and use that board on a new system build for myself if it works out.
