I'm considering setting up a business offering a suite of cloud services for small businesses. Which of the following do you think would be most attractive as a free service that potentially attracts the customer to buy more services. This is the Freemium model.

data backup (limited to office type documents)
website monitoring (check if your site is working)
    online payroll application

Can you expand a bit on what website monitoring would entail?

IMO, data backup is easily done and cheap with an external HD (certainly in a small enterprise situation).

Online payroll could be useful I guess, although the software I use is only €140p/a with unlimited technical support.

Have you ever looked at 37signals?

hey OP well done good idea getting onboard early in the cloud computing - I think a very secure online payroll solution could really do well IF you can get it at the c.€75 price point

Lots come in just over €100, especially for SME's with smaller staff numbers but you will need at least the same functionality and if you could do it at closer to €50 I think you'd have a good product BUT what quantity would you need to sell to make an acceptable return for your own needs?

John Wanamaker said 'half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don't know which half'

if you could put together a set of metrics to see whether or not a website is bringing in business and monetise those metrics then you would have a great business.
