Hi, I just bought my first car.

I need to put wind shield wiper fluid into it though... and I have no idea how to pop open the bonnet.

Google tells me there should be a release catch? Where is that? I found the button for the petrol tank thingamajig. (If anyone would like to explain how to put petrol into the car I'd appreciate that also - it's just put the nozzle in and squeeze the handle right? Or is there more to it?)

For the record I had someone check the car out, but I wasn't there. I didn't buy a car without someone taking a look under the hood.

The bonnet release is usually a lever located under the steering column, in the footwell. It can be different on other cars - and it's possible that there may also be a lever for adjusting the steering column itself.

Did you get a manual with the car?

Some cars can have the lever in the passenger footwell (like a Clio) or use a key in the badge on the front grill(Focus)

No manual, or I would have checked there first :)

It's an 03 Toyota Yaris - I'll run out and check under the steering column.

bonnet releace is usually a handle round the drivers / passenger footwell or steering wheel. if its a ford it could be a keyhole behind the bonnet ford badge ( ITS SPINS TO 1 SIDE AND YOU TURN THE KEY ONE WAY TO UNLOCK AND THE OTHER TO RELEACSE) oops fat fingers and im too tired to correct so pls forgive me for caps

    Ok, managed it, thanks everyone!

There is a lever under the steering wheel next to the driver's door. That pops it open half way, then there's another little lever under the bonnet that you squeeze and voila, open!

Found the wind shield wiper fluid thing easily enough too, big blue top on it with a picture of the wind shield wipers.

Its to the bottom right of the steering wheel, has a picture of a car with bonnet open on it. The water filler for windscreen has a blue cap with a wiper symbol on it. Maybe get a friend to help putting the water in as you need to be sure not to mix water with any of the other fluids.

as its your first car a couple of things you should get someone to show you

1: how to fill the washer bottle

2: how to put oil in and check it

3: how to put petrol in

4: how to change a wheel

5: how to use a can of tyre weld

6: where the radiator water goes in and how to fill with a warm engine

these are the six basic emergency things that will possibly save you getting into serious problems if there is a small issue with the car

Don't really have anyone to show me these things... but I'll try and find someone.
