Dodgy Ethernet port on MacBook

Maybe someone can help me out with this

I have a problem with my ethernet port(en0) on my macbook 2.1.
Airport(en1), Bluetooth, Firewire and USB ports all work fine.

en0 is not detected in the system profiler or in system preferences>network

I have tried creating new locations with no success.
I have also created a new user account, still no change.

Whats strange is when I plug in a known good working network cable I get a link light on my router which is why I'm thinking this could be a software/permissions issue...

I have also booted into safe mode(shift key after the boot up noise?) and it is still not present.

Does anyone have any advise on what my next step is troubleshooting wise?

If this was a PC I could narrow it down pretty quick but never looked into the in's and out's of OSX.

BTW it is running OS X 10.4.11, with all latest security patches from software updates.

I have also tried resetting PRAM and NVRAM.

most obvious thing to try, but also quite annoying, is to do a clean re-install of the OS from scratch.

I did think of doing that but then I realized that I am missing one of the OS install CD/DVD's

I'm going to download an OS like Linux or Ubuntu that I can run live from a CD to see if that makes a difference. Should rule out any software/permissions/driver issues.
