Anyone know what's the name of the theme music from RTE's Rugby coverage?? I mean the music they play at the start and end of commercials. Stirring stuff indeed.

They use two tunes mixed together afaik. The first is an in-house effort followed by an arrangement of Ireland's Call

It's Hans Zimmers work of the Pearl Harbour soundtrack.

Thanks mikedragon32! And you to Steve_o!

I figured it out! The clue was in your post before you edited it mikedragon. It is indeed the melody from "World in Union" which is the theme song to the Rugby World Cup.

In fact, this stirring melody has its origins in "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity", a movement from Gustav Holsts The Planets.

Mmmm... I was in two minds and went off to have a listen, hence the edit.

I know this is a very, very late reply but i just wanted to clarify. all the music in question, including RTÉ's theme and the World In Union track are indeed based on Hans Zimmer's music but not that of Pearl Harbor, it is the theme of Backdraft (1991), in particular, track no. 2 on the soundtrack - 'Fighting 17th'. The melody itself does have its origins in The Planets but its the version Zimmer has churned out that is being used. :)

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know the piece of music the army and gardai bands play when they're on the pitch for internationals, not the anthems obviosuly but I'm not sure how to descibe it!

If your talking about the one thats played while the teams meet the president, its the World in Union/Jupiter by Holst discussed above.

Also, World in Union first came to the fore in 1991 which makes me think it was more based on Holst than Hans Zimmer.
