    I have an old Vaio running windows ME. I want to switch it to Linux so that I can run Sopcast. My main computer is a Powerbook G4 so can I download Unbuntu using the Mac & burn a disc that will work in my Vaio ?

    My concern was whether it would be ok to download & burn the disk on my mac as I do not have internet access on the Vaio yet ?. I am assuming that the download & burn will be the same whether done on mac or pc.

    Yep just open the disk image in Disk Utility [option-click, open with... don't double click as this mounts the image], stick a disk in your mac-hole and with the image selected in the left sidebar click the burn icon (looks like a radiation symbol)

    Hey I'm doing similar at the moment, but want to install onto the same Mac as yours.

    Ubuntu in it's latest version (9.02?) isn't supported for the Powerbook G4 it would seem. It's only for the intel macs. I've just downloaded the Yellow Dog Linux .iso 3.8Gig!!. And the computer won't regognise it. So I can't burn the DVD. Going to have to try again :(

    How did you get on with burning the Ubuntu ISO?

    @studiorat

    Try Debian. Ubuntu's based on it and Debian has a PPC port.

    You can use Disk Utility to burn the ISO.

    My biggest grief is burning the friggin ISO!!! The disk utility doesn't recognise either the Ubuntu or the Yellowdog iso I spent last night and this morning downloading. Another week of X-code looms!!! Which is fine but there's a couple of comands that don't work the same, system["PAUSE"] for example. I'm still finding those!

    Debian comin' up next will keep you posted...
