Anyone here going on it? I've applied to take 6 weeks off next year. I'm just wondering is it hard to get approval from Personnel Depts? Has anyone here been turned down for it?

Sorry, totally unhelpful but I want to take 6 weeks off next year.

Will you be replaced, who will do your job?

If they survive for 6 weeks without you, couldn't they just make your post redundant.

I won't be replaced. But I'm working in software development currently so my employers will ensure that I'm not assigned to any new projects before I head off. Also, I'm currently working in a 3 person team. I just have to ensure that the other people on the team are up to speed with any maintenance issues that may arise with projects that I have been previously been working on while I'm away. And I'll be contactable by mobile. So hopefully I won't be leaving anyone in the lurch. If personnel decide I can't be done without for the 6 weeks then I won't be allowed go, simple as.

And I should stress that it's unpaid leave.

By your logic, could we also say that anyone who takes more than 1 week annual leave, extended sick leave or maternity leave should also be made redundant?

Sorry didn't read the title properly, this is a scheme you can avail of as apposed to a measure being brought in in an organisation.

I really thought if a company was offering 6 weeks unpaid leave in addition to your 4 weeks off per year as a cost saving measure, then the next thing on the cards was redundancy. But this is totally different. My appoligies.

Wow, wish my employer has this

Handy for exams and you could apply months in advance.
    Sounds like a good scheme

Is this anything like "term-time". I think that's the name, it's where working parents take the summer off work as children are off school

it's replacing the old term time scheme. basically, they're tryin to save money by offering people the chance to take 2 - 13 weeks unpaid leave

I think this is a great scheme. Does anyone know if it is also open to Local Authority or VEC staff? Are they classified as civil servants?

If anyone wants to read the official speel on it here is a link to the Department of Finance circular.
