I was passing by the McDonalds in Tralee the other day and I noticed
that the drive thru was slightly different to any other one I have
seen. This one has a member of staff sitting in a little chair where the
cars drive thru and he writes down the orders as they come in.

It looked like he then runs into the restaurant and gives the order to
the staff at the till then runs back to the so called "drive Thru" and
    takes more orders again...

    Only in Kerry

Maybe their comms system was broken and instead of just closing the drive thru, they were improvising.

As above the comms system was probably down. Every Mc Donalds outlet has the same setup (even in Kerry!).

He probably has to translate the Kerry lingo into English, so's the natives get what they ask for.

Yes it is backwards, just didn't think it needed anymore of a response.

I am not from Cork by the way not that I have any problem with it unlike yourself. My current location and where I am from do not have to be the same thing. I doubt very much you are from inside a vindaloo but I could be mistaken...might explain why you are full of hot air :pac:;)

He doesn't run into the restaurant and give the order, the PDA hes using is connected to their system through Bluetooth or something and it wirelessly sends the order inside. Duh!! :D

So how it works is that you give your order to the boy in the little booth, who keys it in to his little McPalm thing. Then you pay at the next window, and window 2 pick up your food. They had a comms system there for years, but it seems noone used it. Having the three steps definitely speeds things up at peak times. So when noone was using the comms system things were slow. So I'm presuming that they decided to put a human there so that people would not ignore the 'ordering step'.

Oh and it's not just Tralee. This happens in lots of drive-thru's.
