Without pulling the busted one apart. The harddrive is fine it's just an issue with the screen

Is there a cable that can connect from one laptop to another to access the files

Dual ended usb cable or ethernet cable perhaps?

So you have either of them? Should be a straight copy & paste from there.

That would be ideal...I can get one as well...anyone know if that would definitely work

Just plug it into a new comp and it will acces the hard drive?

Without a screen it'd be difficult to set up any kind of network.

Better to just get an external USB enclosure: Link

Remove the HDD from the old laptop and put it into the enclosure. Then you can just access it as a normal USB drive from another computer.

Hook up an external monitor (or, depending on the model, maybe a TV) to the laptop, power up the laptop, and it should "see" the external monitor/TV, and the image will come up on that: makes it easier to copy stuff across, as unless the folders are shared, you may not be able to copy stuff as easily.

    Thanks for the replies

I'm not going to open it up, it's under warrenty and I'd make a mess of it...

Just need to get at the documents as I don't want to wait ages until it comes back...

Well then using a monitor to set up networking as suggested above is the best option. You'd never do it without a monitor/tv to see what you were doing :pac:

If you didn't have cables, you'd do it wirelessly if you wanted, over your local network, or set up an ad-hoc network with the other laptop you are using. Just go into Networking and Sharing Center and follow your nose, its very easy with Vista. You can also just right-click a folder and enable sharing in its properties.

    BIG F**KING FLASHING WARNING ! ! !

NO manufacture is liable in any way for your data. They can wipe it, reinstall Windows on it, before even looking at troubleshooting it. Sure, you can ask nicely, but don't count on it.

They usually have a bit in the warranty saying
IF DURING THE REPAIR OF THE PRODUCT THE CONTENTS OF THE HARD DRIVE ARE ALTERED, DELETED, OR IN ANY WAY MODIFIED, ******* IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY LOSS OF YOUR DATA WHATSOEVER. YOUR PRODUCT WILL BE RETURNED TO YOU CONFIGURED AS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED

Keep that in mind, when you send it back.

They may even replace your hard drive, and just throw the old one out the back door, into a skip. Your data is of no concern to them. They will ship back a fixed product back to you "as it was when you bought it". IE: without your data.

The TV thing should work, although the USB enclosure thing would be much easier.

Check the terms of your warranty. To the best of my knowledge, many warranty's allow for upgrading RAM and HDD (indeed, i think they may be legally obliged to under EU competition rules or something).

Sweet. Have a USB to IDE cable, but this would be useful, as I know I'll use it (easier than plugging the HDD into a caddy). Do you have links of a shop over here that would have it, or where did you get your hands on one?

Cool I'm just going to get a SATA usb connector or housing case

The easiest way to backup your data is to plug the laptop into an external monitor, and then back your data up to an external hard drive or USB memory stick. This is assuming that the only issue with your laptop is a faulty LCD screen.
