    Hi,

I'm looking to book something fairly cheap for the week of Dec 26th (prob the busiest week I know!) - getting some good self catering deals for Chamonix in France. The group would consist of absolute beginners & one or two intermediates. Can anyone give me any feedback on this resort? Do you have to bus it to the slopes everyday & if so, how far away are they?

Any suggestions for any other resorts appreciated. Was looking into Austria but seems a tad pricey!

mooreleAustria more expensive than Cham!!! Are you sure you are comparing like with like here or are you just looking at the wrong TO brochure?

Le Tour is the best beginners area so you bus will depend on how far you are away from there for the newbies. Intermidiares again it will depend on where you want to ski.

Chamonix is one of the top resorts in the world because of the terrain and the endless posibilities so you will have fun no matter what. Resteraunts on the hill can be a tad expensive and crap so pack a lunch & enjoy

Try BASS chamonix for lessons really cool bunch of guys with 3 Irish instructors working there

I was getting prices for package to Chamonix for about €500 per person for self catering. Can get some in Soll for about the same price but the rest of the resorts in Austria are around the €800 for self catering and over €1000 for half board hotels.

Can get cheap enough flights to Salzburg with Ryanair but finding it difficult to get accommodation for those dates. Was hoping to try Saalbach but can't really seem to find anything cheap there.

    Any tips?

have you tried the tourist office website for Saalbach, loads of accomodation there. How about this for example http://www.saalbach.com/Search-Accomodation.805.0.html?&L=1
Will probably work out about €300 per head for the week, not bad considering the week thats in it.
Also saw B+B available for €35 per night.

Sorry, that does not link direct to the accom. I found but you should be able to find it. It was an appartment for 2, 5 minutes from centre for €75 per night.

    Moorele,
Who are you booking with for those prices? Saalbach is one of the more expensive Austrian resorts with TO because it is very popular. Try looking at independant options by ringing/.mailing the hotels for best prices etc.

You could also look at staying in Hinterglim connected to saalbach with the main apreas ski bar in the Goatstall just above the village.

Also there is a significant diffrence approx €60 in the price of the lift pass in Chamonix to most austrian resorts and the price of beer and food on average approx 30-40% more in France for a beer in the bars or on the mountain. Check this months fall line to see just how expensive France can be in comparison.

    Hey,

Yeah got those prices on directski.com. Honestly, would prefer to go to Austria if I could. Have been emailing a few apartments direct over the last few days but they all seem to be booked already. I know the week of Dec 26th is pretty popular & if we go the 2nd there is a lot more availability but people are restricted because of work. I have been trying in Saalbach though so I might look up Hinterglemm now.

Thanks guys! I'll let you know how I get on.
