Toughest one I know is from Chapelizod Village up to Phoenix Park gate at the Angler's Rest. Short, but pretty steep. Any others I should know about to get the old lungs going?

Or combine the two, do Knockmaroon Hill, then down the Stawberry Beds and back up Rugged Lane....I do this most Fridays on my way home from work for a challenge.

Somerton Lane. Also short but steep. Next lane down from Rugged Lane towards Chapelizod.

Had a great crash ! going down that hill as a fearless youngster ..I was ok but my poor old black Raleigh Esprit died , bent the hell out of the frame after crashing into a mud bank on a turn and flying into a field still attached to the bike !

There is a 2nd hill ..just before this one .

You could make up a nice hilly route to include most of the hills on either side of the Liffey west of the city eg:

Infirmary road, through Phoenix Park taking in Kyber Rd and upper glen road, Knockmaroon hill, chapelizod hill road, somerton lane, rugged lane, barnhill (lucan), R109 to Westmanstown and any you miss on the way out you can do or repeat on the way home.

Somerton Lane, tougher climb again I'd say as straight up wheras rugged lane has a flatter bit in the middle

when i was training for gaelforce, i used these, i would cycle to phoenix park and do some loops around kyber, had an MTB so go up and down hills at the forth..then cut down into chapelizod..up knockmaroon, down by anglers rest, up somerton, down rugged lane, up tinkers hill ( next one heading towards lucan)..that was plenty for me.

i think knockmaroon is the hardest / steepest , then i'd day somerton..starts off cutting across the hill but a nasty left turn and you're going straight into the hill, tough..rugged was easier i thought, kinda flattens out but it's a great hill to go down..

only really done this at wends aswell as there does be alot of traffic during week and roads are narrow.

Hi. If you cycle out the road to Celbridge, there is a strech that is between Straffan and Newcastle, adjacent to the N7 that there are some pretty good hills with gradients in 10-12per cent range. Most are no more than 1km in length.
The landscape is one of continuing rolling hills.
I found it by mistake a few months back after getting lost.

Athgoe and Pluckstown - is the area.

I found these too, by accident when I was all set for a flat cycle down to
    Naas and back.

Of the ones mentioned above - Somerton Lane is the tougher - IMHO but they
are all neatly lined up for you if you wish to do interval training. Traffic can be
a bit manic in the evenings with people booting along the Strawberry beds.

Of course there's a VIP living on Somerton too! :D

Try the hill west out of Newcastle, across the N7 and up Windmill Hill south of Rathcoole.

I went and scoped out Somerton Lane today. It's very steep in places but its fairly busy with cars flying up it. Would Mill Lane at Palmerstown be a decent hill to train on? It is certainly quieter than Somerton.

Mill lane is a steep enough climb but maybe a bit short for serious training. It's also a dead end so you would be freewheeling down and then climbing straight back up. It might become a bit tedious after a few ups and downs and you wouldn't be getting the benefit of a bit of mileage in as well. For training purposes I would agree with other posters that different combinations of Knockmaroon hill, Rugged lane, Somerton and Westmanstown would be a better challenge. I find early Saturday or Sunday mornings are the quietest, traffic wise.
