hey guys... hoping someone can help answer me in the next few hours!!! Lol!! My cousin is leaving LA and coming tomorrow and the last few weeks i've had her on the search for 3GS unlocked! She's said she's found an asian store that is selling them unlocked for $830.

Now.... im not technologically minded so if ppl can clarify for me that would be helpful!! Is it better to get a phone that is already unlocked? Does this mean when you update the software it will still be okay to use?

Also.. im a bit weary of buying it! It's a great deal and chinese / asian stores in america are usually okay for techy stuff... but there's no refund on the unlocked iPhones and im worried i'll be wasting my money!!!!!!

Anyone gotten a unlocked 3GS from america before??? I'd like to know before i get her to purchase it!!

    Thanks in advance!!!!! smile.gif

    hi amanda

just make sure its the real deal. i bought one in new york in one of them shops with the same no refund policy and got conned. phone was an exact copy of the iphone to the smallest deatils but when you turn it on theres no apple software on it and its a chinese copy. was my fault for not checkin so i thought id pass the info on so other people dont get conned

Thanks for the advice actually!! Never thought of that... do you think if i got my cousin to open the box in the store and to see if it worked with her sim card that would be helpful?? I would assume if it works okay for her then it would be a legit phone!!! :)

Howvmuch did you pay for yours?? :(

ye if the sim card works and you can see the safari web browser and the ipod functions on it. check the back make sure the apple sign is there and the correct manuals and stuff. i was v.hungover wen i got mine so presumed once it looked like it it was the real deal as i thought the copies were different.ha ha. i paid $500 for a 16g one

To be honest, you need to be very, very careful.

There was a thread here some time back about the same thing (actually, if I recall correctly it was regarding the iPhone power charger). The person bought a phone in Dubai and to the casual observer the phone was identical in every way, apart from the charger. Even when the person switched it on, the menus were similar to the untrained eye. Hence why the Irish power adapter would not work in that model - because it wasn't an iPhone.

    So be very careful.
