I'll be going for my black belt in a very short few months, and i'm interested in hearing about how the gradings went for other people in other styles, the intensity of training in the run up, any advice, etc

I trained with my instructor 4 days a week and every day practiced at home for a half hour before college and then on the nights I didn't have training, I'd get one of my brothers, who also trained with me, to practice with me.

Just a lot of training with emphasis on getting it right 10 times out of 10, not getting it right and then moving on.

Continuous assessment - that way you train hard all the time. Where I come from you don't "go for" a grade ... its simply a natural consequence of the effort you make under watchful guidance. This also lends itself to a dojo environment where grades are rarely really worried about. All that matters is training correctly with a good teacher.

getting a black belt in karate is all well and nice, but it remember thats does not mean you are any better at karate than any one else who hasent graded for one,i have trained in three different styles and have three black belts [one of which i had never graded for] but even after over 50 years doing marital arts i still feel like a beginner,if you fail dont worry, there is always a next time ,then comes the next grade to aim for

I got my Blackbelt pretty early. I started taking Tae Kwon Do at the age of 6, and I think got it when I was 13? I went to classes about 3 days a week. It's hard for me to remember, I'm 26 now, but I look pretty beat(well as beat as boucing of the wall 13 year old will get) in the old photos of that day......
Now, I remember absolutely none of those forms. I started studying other styles after that. I just remember the moves, some I still use in Kickboxing&MMA. A lot of them are actually bad habbits that I can easily get my arms broke doing if I make a mistake, or against the wrong person.

I got mine a year ago in WonHwaDo. The training in the run up was very dependent on who you were. I personally ran a minimum four km a day and trained five days a week (Two in classes three for myself.) The key is repitition repitition repitition, seriously. Also heed the warnings. A black belt is not the end of the line. I swapped styles into TKD a month ago and feel ridiculously below par. There's always going to be something new to learn :D
