    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRS_connector this to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RCA_connector
My old trs cable had one of the ends pull off (forgot to take the headset off and tried to walk away from the pc)

Just a note i'm doing this for practical reasons and also as a learning exercise/curiosity so please don't just say go out and buy one it'd be less trouble.

Clipped the outer protection off and got something like this without the mic one. Now am i not correct in saying that audio normally requires 2 wires going to a speaker.

I have my copper a red and green. Each red and green is about 10 tiny tiny wires insulated in red or green and wrapped around themselves and white fluff.
I haven't taken apart an rca connection yet though.

Is the copper wire supposed to be the "other connection wire" for them?

    Yes and No.

One left + one right = Stereo
Therefore , the ground is the two additional un-coloured cables.
TO wire back to an amp/rca coloured inside ground outside, twice.

A shared ground is quite common. The left and right channels require a dedicated positive wire (+). All current is returned through a common ground (-) which means that one wire can act as the return for both the left and right channels. That's why your TRS has only 3 bands on the plug.
