Technique disaster

Getting sick and tired of my technique collapsing without trace. Over the last two rounds I have suddenly lost the ability to hit fairway woods. I mean they have gone from really dependable strong parts of my game to suddenly not being able to get the ball off the ground hitting duff hooks. The time before was driving suddenly gone without trace (back again at 260+). It drives me mad. I'm a long driver, reasonable irons, good touch around the green... and a handicap of 22. I had a round last year where I won the back 9 with 19 points... having scored 5 on the front.

I don't go slightly off the boil, it's just catastrophe. My rounds can vary by 20 shots or more. At a whim. Anyone got any ideas? I'm not playing every week but this is really getting me down.

You drive it 260+, reasonable iron player, good touch... I thought you were going to tell us you were a 5 handicapper.

Just get some lessons and get your fundamentals right.

Unfortunately your golf will continue to get you down unless you practice more. It’s not like football where you can have a kick around with the lads and your touch comes back after say half an hour of playing, in golf you have to work hard to maintain that touch and feel and build a repeatable swing which get you around the course. This is a very basic return to your question but you get out what you put in when it comes to golf and by that I mean if you play every odd week you’re never going to maximise your potential. Lessons will be of value to you as the above posters have said but unless you work on and practice the fundamentals given to you by a teaching pro you will not improve.

My game used to go from single digit handicapper to a 36 hacker in the space of a round. A few absolutely shocking shots would often creep in. For example I had a fresh air last winter (hit the ground about a foot behind the ball with the driver and it bounced over the ball :o )
Turns out that I have to really concentrate on looking at the ball. I have this habit where I will actually stop looking at the ball on my downswing and all hell breaks loose; shanks, right off the toe (not pleasant with a fairway wood!)

You dont usually just loose all ability to hit a shot unless something has changed in your setup that you dont notice. I have a rescue that I need to think harder about when gripping as my natural grip with this club leaves the face closed.

Also, Id reconsider my course management. If you were/are hitting the ball as well as you say, you wouldnt still be off 22 unless you are making silly decisions. Have one round where you dont ever try to have a single par (unless you would be hitting a stupid shot to avoid it) This will mean playing all the par 4's as par 5's, possibly by hitting an iron off the tee etc.

You should really try to play to 22 before you try to play to 12.

    Best of luck.
