Just started a masters in UCD and already I'm in financial difficulty!!

Ive got the grant, get 1470e for the year.. havn't received the 1st payment yet.

I have compulsory field trips that count as % towards the exam... so have to go..

Cost for trip 1: Petrol to Kerry from Dublin and B+B for 2 nights at 30 a night.
Cost for trip 2: Flights to Dorset 120e and B+B for 3 nights at 40 a night.

Trip 1 is coming up this week and I have 150e to last me the month.
Trip 2 is the 2nd last weekend in October, so its all coming at once for me!

I got paid and my wages went on my overdraft and loan repayments :(

I cant get any more loans out as I have 2 at the minute.

I'm applying for the SAF too but payments wont come until November if I get it.

I think im up s**t creek without a paddle and its actually scaring me now!

I'm not one to worry about money usually but I am now!! :(

I'm afraid I'll end up dropping out!

    Anyone in the same boat?

I'm particularly worried about the field trips!

sleep in your car when you go to Kerry and save 60 quid or stay in a hostel.

My parents arent in a position to give me money. Both retired.
I wont get another loan anyways, I have too much on as it is.

Not sure what SAF is, but most colleges have a hardship fund that will give you money but must be paid back. I had to use it once and it was a godsend.

I don't know the amounts etc but I think you're entitled to cover for accomodation and travel for compulsory field trips for postgraduate. If they are counted towards your final mark etc..... Double check it but am pretty sure.....

which county city council did you apply for the grant with - most have said they will have the money out by the end of this week - i got mine today thankfully - Im a mature student doing a masters too - its tough going especially when u have direct debits and loans to pay - but you should be able to borrow on the strength of the grant maintenance cheque - check with your local council website for dates of payments of cheques - plus also call into the bank and show them your letter from the council saying you are due the money - might help

    whats saf?
