    Hi there,

The girlfriends car started burning oil bad the other day, its a 307 1.4hdi. Now she just started a new job and cant afford a new turbo or engine rebuild right now so is there any additives that could hide the smoke? I know she has to keep an eye on the oil levels but they seem not to be going down too bad.

    Thanks

Its not going to get any better. Get it checked out to see what the problem is. In the mean time, it will be 20 diesel & 20 engine oil when pulling into the service station.

getting this type of problem diagnosed can be costly and she doesn't have the money for it right now. Its not really losing that much oil at all, the level doesn't seem to be dropping that much at all.

It hardly just started burning oil if it did you will have a serious problem.

Its quite possible that there is something else wrong possibly a faulty EGR valve or maybe a leaking injector.

Get it checked before it does more damage like maybe blocks the cat.

Are there any faults been displayed..? e.g....Anti Pollution Fault
Is it black or blue or smoke..?
Is the car down on power..?
as martinr5232 says it could block your cat..

    Thanks Ron!

its blue smoke coming out, not too bad off cold start but if your in around traffic for any time at all and the engine heats then its pretty bad. No warning lights showing at all. I had the car serviced and there's a small hole along the exhaust that corroded.

Are you sure that the mechanic did'nt fill the oil over the top mark...?
if so the oil can sometimes blow out of the engine breather and into the
    turbo intake.
It may also be oil passing through the turbo due to a failing turbo...
Let us know how you get on.

it was burning oil before servicing so dont think the overfill is the issue. It could very well be the turbo, there's a crap noise off it. I'd hope this is it as it seems like it'd be the cheapest fix, get a scrapyard turbo and fit it and see what happens!

Sometimes injectors can cause the engine to smoke ...if you got a leak off test done on your injectors it may eliminate faulty injectors....thats before you go pulling out the turbo.......:)

I would strongly advise against fitting a second hand turbo. I am speaking from experience. Make sure you go to reputable mechanic who knows what he is doing. It is not just a case of switching turbos and away you go.
