Hi all plan on doing my first marathon in connemara in April. I play football so have a good general fitness level but have never ran more than the usual 10k or so and never in a race situation. Can anyone advise on a good programme they may have followed? secondly am i mad trying to do a marathon, should i try for a half one first? Thanks

There is loads of programs for the marathon if you google it. Here's one guy that alot of people refer to:
    http://www.halhigdon.com/
    Also www.runnersworld.co.uk has good info.
Most suggest you run a couple of races in the lead up so you get experience of the race day 'feel'. Good luck.

I did my first ultra there this year and would recommend you should also include hill sessions in your training most plans should have this.

Find a few 10k events, then maybe a 10 mile and a half marathon before the full marathon. It's not completely necessary, but will get you used to race day, and whether you actually like distance running. It also helps you get used to pacing, I've found. It's too easy to train at a certain level and then loose the head on race day and go off too fast!

April is very doable,I'm heading for DCM in four weeks as my first, Ive been (very roughly) following the sub 4.30 training plan in this forum. Maybe I'm premature to be advising you :) but its based on the advice I was given here and irl.
