Hi all. I'm using a ubuntu PC in halls, which is connecting to the network/internet properly (with many thanks to the ISS/JCR dudes). But i cant get synaptics or empathyIM working (properly many other such apps too!), which i'm guessing is down to proxy issues. Does anyone have any idea what i should set my synaptics/empathy proxy settings to?. Or even better, does anyone know the settings for the manual/automatic system-wide proxy in system > preferences > network proxy?. Thanks for reading.

For System > Preferences > Network Proxy I think it's

    Proxy: proxyB.tcd.ie
    Port: 8080
    Username: your username
    Password: your password

You might also need to set the same details in your some of your program's preferences if they don't work after that... I used Ubuntu all last year in college so I think that's correct, I'm using something slightly different now so I can't doublecheck.

Tried that, no joy unfortunately :(. Any other ideas?.

Btw, what should i use for the FTP/secure http in network proxy?. Or is the same for each?. And do i need to enter anything under socks?.

All my other ideas are stupidly obvious things like putting http:// before proxyB.tcd.ie and changing the capital B to a lower b or trying proxya instead, or assuming Halls uses a different proxy? ... So sorry, no. (Or else when you open Firefox, the dialogue box might say "the network at proxyname:port requests authentication" or some such, use that proxy?) Possibly google setting network proxies for Ubuntu in case I'm completely wrong, which is likely tbh. Also no idea about those other settings, not sure when exactly they come into play...

I dunno at this stage, i've tried everything i can think of and more. I think i'll just have to swallow my pride and go begging to the ISS helpdesk .

Very thanks for the help though, honestly didn't think i'd get any replies to a question about linux in halls :D:).
