Coillte lease holders....experiences?

Just looking to hear from other Coillte lease holders about their experiences in doing business with them. We have had problems every year with harvesting operations on-going during the peak of the season, even right through, including road construction. Sheep famers are also entering the forest whenever they want, very dangerous, disappointing considering all the so-called health and safety regulations they have to obide by. It's very annoying to say the least, especially with the direction the lease prices have gone. Have any readers here had similar experiences and what have they undertaken???

I'm confused, did R. Molloy actually pay the government too much?

You definitely dont get value for money, thats for sure. Im very much into my stalking, whether I use a camera or a rifle can vary. Im in county Galway and I never could win in the bidding for leases contest,I only ever managed to get shooting on Coillte ground in County Laois <snip> . In all of the thousands of acres of woodland in galway only one man managed to wrap it all up,I could never win. Anyway in laois as Im sure with all the rest, you had to let the forester know whenever you were going out, this was supposedly for the safety of others but nobody else ever had to let them know, you could meet anyone on your travells from workmen to joggers. You had to be out by 12.00 noon I think this was to let walkers in. Complete bull**** and Id never have anything to do with them again,I paid thousands for years.

The idea of leasing Coillte ground in Wicklow has never appealed to me mainly because of high public usage anywhere near where I live. Apart from that, I'm happy with a modest number of animals from farmland and farm forestry. I have the impression the cost is very high compared to other european countries. I know it would vary but I've wondered what it works out per animal culled.

Not sure how much you all pay for Coillte leases buti believe costs are higher back in France.
Just for comparaison my uncle shoots red deers in the west of France on a privatly own forest (4000 Ha) , it is €500 per stag shot. This is on top of the annual fee which includes boars , hinds , roe bucks and all the rest).
By the way this is a driven hunt as no stalking permitted.
Red stags hunting is not cheap in France.

To shoot in France you must have an annual hunting permit and mandatory 3rd party insurance. Depending on where you live it costs about 250-300 euro in total, including the obligatory contributions to federal, state and wildlife office. A full permit, to include big game (deer/boar) works out at about 350 euro.
I've been told that it now is necessary to have a hunting permit before you can buy a hunting gun, the laws have changed since I lived there.

Cheap compared to Germany...I'd estimate a Roe or any other animal would cost you about 800 euros per head,in costs ,insurance, winter fodder, game damage to farmers crops which you the hunter are responsible for. Also it would be a very novel idea that you could shut down the forest so you could go shooting in it.you have every man and his dog[on a leash hopefully] trapising thru the woods at any given time.It is up to you the hunter to make yourself known to them and warn them that there is a possibility of flying lead in the area.
The German version of Coilte would be responsible for managing the game themselves, and usually very badly.[If you can imagine desk jockeys going hunting.]So quite large tracts of land there are off limits to civillian hunters as well.

Anyways,Coilte has never impressed me as being a good deal either, especially some of their more farsical regulations that seem to be there to make life more difficult for the hunter than making it easier for you to do your part of the deal.Nor this whole situation with the HCAP and individuals preaching do as I say not what I do.Plenty of shooting available still here without Coilte lets.

The €350 is for your hunting license, you still need to join a gun club on top of that and that can be very expensive when hunting deers / boars etc...
i believe you can buy a shotgun no problem.
Regarding rifles all you need is to show your valid hunting license or target shooting membership in order to buy the rifle. Once done you just declare it to the authorities.

Our club had the shooting rights to 300 acres and when Lord so and so did not renew his title we had to lease the shooting off coillte. The wood was central on our club lands and the local farmers have a closed shop to shooters unless they were in our club. We opened up 3 natural ponds that were in the wood and used them for rearing 500 ducks. Had 2 pens with a 600 bird capacity each. A nice little set up to say the least. 8 years later we were told our lease was not renewed as a tender had gone in at a higher price by some lad from the neighbouring parish who wanted to run a commercial shoot money straight into their pockets. We were not given the oppertunity to even match it. We had run shoots and anything we made went back into restocking and placing feeders around all the local farms. They are just a bunch of shirts and ties sitting in an office with no idea of the locality, they just see the end result which is €€€€€ for them.

I wonder whether that doesn't violate the rules for public tenders ...

is it not a case of everyone offering what they think is a good price/enough to secure the lease and then whoever has the highest gets it?
